Bluhduh EDIT! 90mm Bolts Found!

EDIT: 90mm bolts are available again! The thread is here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=875146.

Original post:
I picked up a Kaoko from another inmate here for my '05 R1200GS. As seen in many posts, I need the 90mm retaining bolt (part # 32717698103). However, I called Bob's BMW, only to learn that the bolt is discontinued!

Even McMaster-Carr doesn't carry a bolt that will fit. Does anyone have any suggestions? Tomorrow, I'm calling Bike Bandit and A&S Cycles, as they both listed the part online, but no promises that it is in stock.

Perhaps it'll have to go back on the FM...

I have installed a few with the short bolt. Have you tried it?

Also, by all means, do not stop with Bob's (who is by far NOT the only authority on all things BMW). Call Mortons and Max BMW and see what they say.

Also, if still no luck, try fastenal. http://www.fastenal.com/web/home.ex

80mm too short

Thanks for the tips, Jim! I definitely tried the 80mm bolt, making sure the pieces were lined up, no strippage, no extra space, etc.

It turns out the 80mm bolt sank 10mm into the threads inside the handlebar (the precious ten mils that I lost with the Kaoko).

I found a few close options at Fastenal, but not quite the match. Still checking all their nooks & crannies.

Mortons and Max were closed today. They're definitely on my list for tomorrow!

Same here. Instructions said to use a different length bolt. I ordered one but that was months ago. I asked about it a couple of times since, the last time probably 6 months ago, but it was still back ordered. I used the bolt that came with it; seemed to have more than an adequate amount of thread. Actually I had totally forgot about it until reading this thread.

Sanity check

Okay, I figured that I must be missing something here, so I revisited the situation. I took it all apart to see what could be affecting the bolt.

The bolt by itself has plenty of length through the Kaoko. I reinstalled it, without the washer for the handguard, and Voila! It seats:

As you can see, the washer has significant depth to it:

Normally, I'd see about going without it (even though it's not aesthetically pleasing or symmetrical). However, the bolt hole in the handguard is just a fraction smaller than the bolt head. So the washer is actually important:

Someone, somewhere has a 90mm bolt, I'm sure. More to follow tomorrow.

A few months ago I spent a considerable amount of time to find a 90mm bolt off the shelf.
I struck out at Canadian dealers as well as my industrial fastener suppliers.
The only alternative was have a machine shop make one up. The owner was not willing to spend the money.
If you find a source let us know.

Can you order one from Kaoko? I see this on their web site.

please check your OEM Bar End Weight central retaining bolt prior to ordering. If 80mm long part CCF400-08 is required. If 90mm long part CCF400 is required).

Both hex head. Torx really makes it tough.

If I recall properly the tread pitch on the bar ends is 1.50 threads per mm fine thread. 1.75 TPMM coarse thread appears to be the most common in the M12.

I have been also searching for M12 X 1.50 70mm to 90mm countersunk flat head bolt either torx or hex for mounting barkbuster type hand guards on a R1200GS, I will watch this posting close, maybe someone will come up with a source for this odd size.

I am currently running a Kaoko throttle lock on a 08 R1200GSA and found the stock bolt long enough to secure the stock plastic hand guard using the aluminum bushing.

Anybody looked for a 100mm length and then cut to suit?

The stock bolt is:
32 71 7717802 COUNTERSUNK HEAD SCREW M12X1,5X80-MKL

I wonder if the 1.5mm is comparable to any other designated tpmm, like a DIN.

I figure the mounting part must be stuck down just a little too far.

The search continues...!

supply update

Nothing at Bob's, Max's, Morton's, or Bike Bandit.

How difficult would it be to rethread a bolt of a different pitch? Or maybe put threads on some bar stock?

Sure it is a 12x1.5 90mm bolt? I could get you a pair of stainless steel allen head countersunk bolts here in Arg. and mail them... In fact I could get quite a few, they are unexpensive if you want to sell'em or just give'em for free up there...
