Too quick

XR650RSmokedU is quicker than I am! Thanks for posting the pics. It looks like I'm actually starting a build thread instead of just a "hey look at some stuff I bought" thread. Awesome!

So XR650RSmokedU is giving me some great help on this build. I haven't build an engine before and he has built countless (including all the times our friends... incuding myself... decide to destroy our CRF450's!). He's a wealth of engine knowledge and it would be an even slower process without him. And if anyone is interested, he's got his own thread on crank bearing installs here: http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=24674.new#new

Oh, and I found a hickup in the mix. When I split the cases I found a small crack. It was along one of the studs on the bottom side of the two main cases. The crack doesn't go from the inside to the outside, but does show a slight split along the inside of the case. It looks like the cases had never been split so I'm ruling out over torquing and guessing impact. The rest of the cases look to be in great shape and the stud looks like it should hold. I think I'm leaving it. Any thoughts? Maybe use epoxy? JB weld to the rescue? I do have a skid plate that I bought, so the engine shouldn't even be exposed to a direct impact again.

Pretty cool stuff finally happening. Comments welcome

Case cleaning

So here is a pic of a clean case and of a dirty case. I was wondering how I was going to clean these cases off. Well... here's the secret. A big long bristle wire welding brush, brake cleaner and elbow grease. It's been taking me about 20-30 minutes a case. The results might not be at the level of a soda/sand blast or dropping it in a tank, but it looks pretty damn good, was cheap, and was simple.

Jetting for FCR MX 40mm

What's up everyone. It's been a pretty damn long time since I've been here. Let's just say life has gotten in the way.

So I just picked up an FCR-MX 40mm from an 08 CRF250. I've also procured a NOSS Machine adapter (slickness). So now I'm looking for jetting recommendations.

I'm at sea level but will go as high as 8k (big bear). Most of my riding is local (Ocotillo Wells). I live in Oceanside, CA and the bikes plated so I suppose I'll be on the street with it a lot here too.

So what jetting should I use?

Here is the current jetting specs (waaaaay too rich) and the current mods:

Needle: NCYR
Main: 170
Leak: 70
Slow: 68
Piolet: 45
Haven't taken air out yet... need a smaller screw driver.

FMF Q4
FMF powerbomb
Uni high flow
Less restricted intake manifold (New, stock for older non CA bikes)
1st bore over.

I'm on a fresh motor (has only ran for about 10 second) so I don't want to fry my top end yet.

One more Q. How the hell do I prime the new oil pump. I have read that you disconnect oil line that is attached to the case and use a turkey baster to pump from the back side.

I ran it for a short while (on the stock CV) and didn't get any flow so I stopped. Even with taking the plug out and kicking for 20 minutes there was no flow to the head or oil in the oil filter chamber. Don't want to fry it. Please help!!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts? I leave it open to discussion.

Oh... and I'l post some pics too. It turned out really sick!

Yeah yeah.... put an air nozzle in the oil filler on the frame and start it up then pressurize the oil tank at least thats what I've heard.

Now, how about those updated pics you promised!

Jetting

Bump for jetting?

Posted elsewhere, but help here is appreciated too!!!!!

Hey everyone. Been beat to death I know, although I've thoughoughly searched this forumn as well as others for information. Just a quick confirmation would be great... or any possible suggestions. I'm running the LAB2V in a few days and I want my jetting to be spot on. Don't want a lean condition for a 400 mi ride. I understand jetting is different for each bike, although I want a good starting off point and with the gas out there today I don't really trust plug checks.

99 XR600R
Opened earlier year intake manifold
FMF power bomb and Q4
Freashly rebuilt (all bearing top and bottom end, head reworked by XR's only with new KW intake valves, 1st bore over on stock oversized piston)

I run CA desert mostly (live in Oceanside... So cal on the coast). The bike is plated so I could go other places on rides, but usual elevation is 0-2K feet.

Carb is a 40MM FCR from an 08 CRF250R.

Jetting that I have to try with (I am thinking of running the ones in bold):
Main air - Fixed... 200 I believe
Slow air - 100
Main jet - 160, 165, 170, 175, 180, 185
Slow jet - 68
Piolet jet - 42, 45, 48, 50
Needle - NCYR, OBDVR
Leak jet - 70

Already have an extended fuel screw and cleaned the carb... just need a jetting confirmation before I run the bike.

NOSS adapter of course and I plan on running the CRF throttle assembly.

I was going to cut the TPS cables. This was done on the TT FCR I had for my old DRZ.

Should I run the hot start?

Thanks for being awesome and helping everyone!
