What are the adapters and why are they needed?
Will it work with 17 inch rims?

Hey Mr Fish - the tool itself fits into a 20mm hub and comes with a sleeve (shim) that slides over it to fit a 25mm axle / hub. The available adapters are 15mm and 17mm, in case your bike needs one. Could you use a 15 mm rod in a 17 mm axle, most likely but there will be a little slop. I have personally used it for 17,18 and 19 inch rims. I'm pretty sure ti works fine on 21 inch rims, and the manufacturer says it does. One inmate said he had trouble with a 21, I didn't have time but I meant to pull the 21 off my KLR and see if the standard tool is long enough _ I'll try it tomorrow and post up.

If you watch the video, you will see exactly how it works. I have a tire machine but this tool works really nice, esp for my tube type wheel, and especially Excel rims (which my mount tool doesn't so well). This tool does not break the bead, nor does it remove the tire from the rim.

So, as far as adapters go, just measure your axles, or go ahead and get them anyway since you'll need them some day. And to be honest, if you had access to a saw, lathe and dies, you could make whatever adapter you wanted. Plan to place the order this week, so let me know.

I never started a new thread because I really didn't plan to do a second group buy. If someone starts a 3rd someday, that would be a good idea Oh yeah, last time the guys that bought just the tool were in it for under 115 (shipped to them USPS Flat Rate). The guys that bought a tool and both adapters were in for under 150 again shipped. Are is giving us the same break this time, but we don't have any control over the EURO conversion, International shipping, and USPS went up a buck for the medium Flat Rate box since the last GB. I don't know the exact price until I email Are with our order, and he calculates the shipping and invoices me (which I pay right then).

It would be nice if this tool would would demount a tire, you'd never have to carry irons. But I've found that it mounts tires so much smoother than irons, that I would be tempted to carry it on long trips, along with my irons, And I've gotten pretty handy with irons over the years. I have a homemade tire machine, kinda like a poor mans NoMar, and a mount - demount bar that works very well for street tires, and tubeless tires. It will work fine on tube type tires also, but doesn't like Excel brand rims for some reason. Are's tool is nice cause you know the tool isn't touching the tube.

So, the KLR was tied up, but I popped the front wheel (21") off of my WR400. This pic is with the tool at the end of it's stroke. The tool has to be inserted all the way into the hub in order to get enough reach (length) but I don't see any reason why I would have problems mounting a 21 incher.
