Looking at an XL600, got a few questions

Hey there. Im looking at an 84 XL600. A bit beat up but was not abused. What are some things I should look out for on them? Was it the 500's that had an oil starvation problem to the head?? What was the actual reason for this and did the 600's have it to?

Anything else??

Thanks a lot guys.

the xl600 was a solid bike. i had a few 83,84,87s and they were so reliable nothing went bad on them except a worn clutch at around 40 or 50,000 miles.i had one that went 97,000 miles and i sold it running perfect still. i would just make sur the motor sounds good and shifts good. look for dry intake boots that may crack and leak i have heard but i never had that problem i think since i rode mine all the time and didnt let them sit more than a week at the most.

I have an '83, and absolutely love that bike. You will need to learn or develop a "technique" for starting the big beast, but once you have it there is no problem.

The biggest concern would be discontinued parts from Honda. The one I ran into was the external oil lines running down the front of the motor. The fittings were damaged on mine, and I had to source some used ones from a salvage yard. It has been all good for 10 years or so.

If you get it, two nice upgrades are the Clarke extended range tank, and the XR'sonly.com oil temp gauge dipstick.

I just use Shell Rotella T, because it is easy to find, cheap, and works good.
