It's starting to look like a rally car.. Can't wait to see the graphics you and Lonnie come up with for the outside

More engine noise? Check.

Today I went in to see what the local muffler shop could do for a deal on a new muffler. I also had a crack in the resonator and just wanted it removed. There are also three cats on the damn Outback...that's a few too many if you ask me.....so, just don't ask me

Don Burden is a fixture around these parts...and his muffler and towing business is a true small town family shop that has been around for decades. Don is a master with a tow truck or crane. I've known him for more than 17 years and we get along pretty good...probably because we both like to bitch about crap all day

I went in hoping for a good deal, but walked out with a great deal. I wanted to replace the cracked pipe and stock muffler with something a little more throaty, without being overly loud. Remember, this car is being driven on the highway for thousands of miles before and after the race, so don't want that annoying and fatiguing loud drone the whole way.

I figured he'd have to order up a muffler but he pulled a new one off the shelf..it was smaller than the original stock one...but not by much. We talked. They came up with a nice smaller/lighter (and louder) Magnaflow unit that was brand new but for a different application. No problem. This is a budget race car, not a show car...function must follow form on somethings.

With some modification, they welded it up and put it on. I opted to reuse the plain tip from the stock muffler rather than some shiny chrome one that will just be scratched to shit in the sand.

Here's the old resonator and pipe that we cut out..

And the new Magnaflow

On the road it sounds pretty nice....quiet until you lay into it a little. It has a nice throaty sound when on the gas which is what I wanted. It feels like its breathing a little easier but that is probably just in my head. And the best part? Burden's didn't charge me a cent

They were already going to get their name on the car for giving me a great deal on a junked Forester early in this build...but now their real estate on the car just improved!

It's cool to get these local sponsors....I will have to put the car in a local parade this year to show off my appreciation...of course, it should have Baja dust on it by then!

This ride is really coming together...! It's been interesting watching the progression from a subbie to a "Subbie..."
Can't wait to see the vinyl wrap and colors.
(Maybe install those old style Subaru Brat rear-seat handles for your wife to hold on to!)

I've been itching to do an exhaust on mine, but not sure how to get the sound I want and how much of the stock exhaust can be deleted in Cali! So looks like you only did an axle back, is that right?! From my understanding they have 2 cats as well as the resonators, but havent looked!

What I want is for it to pass smog and with the sound of the STIs, quiet at idle and gets a bit louder on take off, but I definitely dont want it to catch too much attention or have the freeway droan!

2 or 3, I don't really know. Don't care. We don't have smog testing in rural Oregon.

But I have no suggestions either as I am just winging this whole thing...sorry

Muffler shops usually know the rules pretty well for their local areas, as OC stated, we don't have testing in rural Oregon, but do have it in most larger towns and some small ones too. I've worked with our local shops and they know pretty well what they can get away with legally, so check your Oakland area exhaust shops and see what they suggest.

As it happened, I stopped in an exhaust shop on the way home from work. Needed a couple cracks in my moto skidplate welded. When I was done, I inquired. These Subs have 2 cats, both mandatory to pass smog, then a resonator and muffler. Shop suggested to ditch the factory resonator and muffler and put a MagnaFlow in. From what I gather tho, to get the cool STI sound, it requires a UEL (Un- Equal Length) Header, factory on the WRX and STIs.

Yes a UEL will give you the proper boxer rumble from what I gathered...but I also believe they have clearance issues with the primitive skid plate...but if your not using a skid plate, probably not an issue.

I did take a crappy video (with crappy sound) of the new sound with my iPhone..of course Laura called me an idiot for uploading it...but here ya go.

What's that I hear?

The wonderful sounds of a kick-ass Subie, that's what!

I didn't notice in the thread--can someone help me out--what was the fix for the wheels? I can see that it looks wider, but was it spacers? Or something with A-arms and lateral links?

I run equal length headers in my WRX. I gave up the "lumpy" boxer exhaust note--which I also love. The resulting exhaust note is less distictive, but I like it too. I tell myself that I sound like a 4-cyl turbo Porsche now to make myself feel better. In exchange for sound I gained better flow if the 5000-7000+ (redline) range. I've had a 3" turboback for years so the ELH vs stock manifolds was on top of that. For WOT running, I think there's benefits to be had--which probably explains why the Subaru rally cars run ELH. For street cars, P-n-P'd manifolds with a good x-pipe is probably better than headers of either type.

Post #10 has an attached soundfile, if anyone is curious: http://forum.subiefanatic.com/index....h__1#entry7239

Just spacers from MyWheelAdapters.com

Great price and fantastic quality.

I installed as directed, proper lug nuts, make sure not to use an impact wrench, and anytime I remove a wheel I recheck the torque with a torque wrench and so far so good

Wait, those Subarus are hubcentric, right? But those spacers are not? At least, not on the outside, at the new wheel-mounting-surface? They really should have a lip on them, like these. Unless maybe you're running lug-centric wheels?
