As for the the PH64 carbs, I haven't come across a set of those yet. Someone did a write up of XL carbs in this thread somewhere and I think those ones were from a California model. |

This XL is a hot rod, and feels like a minibike compared to my 1150GS. What a blast! Cheers! |

Hell yeah the XL is an amazing motorcycle. I've been climbing hills I never thought possible since I got the 13t sprocket. This damn bike will climb anything now.

Here is my 1984 xl600r, bought it about 5 months ago w/18k miles. Has fresh oil and i loosened up the banjo bolt to be sure about oil getting to the head. Got it running and heard this coming from the engine. I may be wrong but the rattling does not sound normal. I took the engine apart to fix some stripped bolt holes and did not find any major wear or damage. It made this noise before and after I had the engine apart.
Read that it could be a worn out cam chain or cam chain tensioner. Ideas? http://youtu.be/aUZS_dNEaPs |

I don't know for sure what they fit, they were eBay finds that went cheap enough for me to buy for parts. They are the style that has the fuel screw on the downwind side if the slide. My bike is a cali model that came to me with XR carbs and canister removed already. I hate to remove the carbs. I have evolved techniques to replace jets, slides, change needle position and jets and emulsion tubes etc. with the carbs in place. The only part yet that I could not do in frame was the decel diaphragm. I hope most of that is behind me now as I have finally gotten it dialed in as close as I think I can get it. I can adjust for seasonal changes with main jet swaps which are easy with the screw off bowls.

I've been riding my newly rebuilt XL a bit over the last week or so, as the weather has been a bit nicer around here.
One thing I've noticed is a fair bit of "coughing", or extremely short intervals of power loss, frequently during cruising at a constant speed/engine RPM. Usually stops happening if I open the throttle, although it sometimes continues to happen during the very first bit of throttle opening. I am thinking this may be a result of too-lean jetting. Does that make sense? The carbs were thoroughly cleaned as part of the rebuild, so I don't think it's a result of general carb dirtiness or clogged orifices. Thanks, Christian

As a reminder:
I have the stock jets, but I'm up at 7000 ft. altitude. Thanks!

Generally if it is surging a little, that is a sign of leanness. What jets are you running exactly? 7K elevation is roughly equivalent to one notch richer on the jetting from my experiences.
These were lean to start with at best. Easy enough to pop the bowls and look. Can be done on the bike with a short screwdriver or bit in an offset driver. |
