Show us your Thumper all packed up and ready for tent camping. Under 600cc bikes...

I don't have my KTM 530 set up yet for camping off of yet but I would like to see some Thumpers set up for tent camping. I know there are threads like this but nothing with the smaller Thumpers.. Hoping to get some ideas of the best way to load up my thumper for some overnight tent camping. The big bikes you can load them up for bear but these smaller bikes take some planning. Show us how you do it and maybe even a discription of what you take with ya.. Let the photo's begin..

Full camping gear and food, plus 1.75 gallons of spare fuel on a DRZ400E. Buying lightweight and compact gear is a necessity, and a real plus when the trails get rugged.

Wow, that's impressive Canuman. When you are hauling all that extra weight like that how does it effect your suspension? Did you have to have your bike resprung keeping the extra weight in mind?

It's not that much weight. I've selected my gear to take up minimal space and be light, so I doubt if the entire set-up weighs over 35 pounds -- and 12 of that is in the Rotopax and the additional fuel. What's really critical is to keep the load "between the axles" and as low as possible. Inmate Jackpiner57 designed my racks to do this. Weight that is ahead or behind the axles really throws the handling off. Is there a difference between riding an unloaded bike and a loaded one? You bet there is. That being said, the DRZ400 feels like a feather compared to my KLR with much the same load.



I have almost exactly the same gear for this two-week tour of Cannonshot's Upper Peninsula Adventure Trail and a big section of Ontario, but nearly 100 lbs more bike. The load nearly killed me in the deep dry sand on the UP in 95 degree heat.

It's all about selecting the correct gear. Rather than carrying jeans, I pack a pair of nylon pants that have zip-off legs that also work as shorts. They weigh a few ounces, and are presentable enough in many of the places I'm likely to go. I have a bunch of technical shirts made of a polyester material. I can carry three of these in the same space that I could carry one cotton tee. They are easy to wash, and dry rapidly. My stove and pot kit weigh about a pound. In the summer, my sleeping bag weighs three pounds. When the weather gets cold, I'll carry a second bag. A pair of Crocs are a little luxury that weigh a few ounces, and are a great relief at the the end of the day.
