It really is the middle of the night here (1am!), but then due to a severe lack of bed-space at the hotel now the rally is in full swing, I am relegated to sleeping on the balcony of a hotel room for the next couple of nights - good job I brought a sleeping bag!

So I will take advantage of the fact nearly everyone else is asleep (with a couple of notably ADVrider exceptions - both Tony Schattat and LukasM are still up too, having spent the evening sorting out niggling issues with their/team mate's bikes), and upload a few more photos from the day...

I caught up with the whole IYSK US contingent earlier this afternoon as they were busy getting all seven bikes through scrutineering... this is Dave wrestling with the mousse machine:

Before recovering with a nice cup of English tea (courtesy of Patsy Quick and the Desert Rose team parked next door):

Once Ned was through scrutineering, we headed out into the nearby dunes (well, dunettes really) for a few photos:

As the light was fading, I also took the opportunity to get a few action shots with Ollie Lloyd #332 too...

...while the local spectators did their best meercat impression!

At 7.30pm the Orga cranked up the Rammstein once again (arrrrgh!) to announce the start of the initial rally briefing...

...actually, it was preceded with a neat compilation video of the day (which I understand should be on Youtube round about now) that has some really cool footage from a heli-cam... if they use that tomorrow morning flying over the GP style mass-start, it should look awesome!

I took the opportunity to get arty by the pool:

While Martin Wittering from Torque Racing avoided the Rammstein nightmare completely by finishing off a few jobs on the team's bikes:

Breakfast is from 6am tomorrow, and the competitors assemble for the start at 7.30am...

I'm going to get a few hours sleep, and will be back tomorrow - hopefully with some photos from the start/first stage, together with all my individual rider's reports!

toot toot!

Jenny xx

Man, it must be hot in that Klim jacket. Looks like different gear than Ned wore at Dakar last year.

Newer model Rally Jacket than the one he used in Dakar, Pretty sure those are 2013 Dakar pants.
No, it is not hot at all. If you stop moving, just pop it off. You are down to your t-shirt in seconds.

Jen

I have an addiction to those Panasonic Lumix cameras - looks like one of the LX models? Which lenses are you using for your shooting with the Canon? I loved your "action" shots from yesterday. Superb! And you are right - a little Rammstein goes a long way ;-)

And they're off!

Mass start for all competitors on the first day of competition - a 100+ km loop through soft sand dunes...

The classes were grouped - Profi Cars first (at least that should sort of mark the off-piste route, although it will correspondingly chew it up for the bikes of course), then Moto Profi 20 minutes later, followed by the Amateur Moto and finally Amateur Cars...

The Profi bike line-up:

I'll be heading out onto the stage later to try and get some action shots... more from the start and my highlighted riders soon!

No...sleep...til...next...Saturday!

Great great great report Jenny !!!!

The different approaches in solving common problems is amazing... All these bikes, riders solving the same problems like where to carry tools, spares, emergencies etc... There are some ingenious solutions there.

Ned's bike is yummy
I am looking forward to see ktmmitch's progress in the rally , I am sure he is very well prepared. THE force is strong within him

With the roadbook upside down, do people switch the buttons on the roadbook switch to have a more ''normal '' feeling ? It would be weird to scroll upwards and then forwards (based on the scroll direction I mean ) It seems logical to go with a switched setup.

Godd luck to Timi, had seen her preparing for the rally and you could see that spark in her eyes
Keep them coming Jenny , appreciate everyones effort to keep us updated
Good luck to everybody !
Ride safe and Jenny please come back with a googlion of photos
