those are a Neoprene wrap around the regular grips. I can't remember what they were called. It's a square of textured neoprene, that wraps around and velcros on. Good for eliminating vibrations.

Wife rode her R1200 with the SW Motech bars and H&B bags on it for 5 years which were wider. Never had a close call. Yes, they are a couple of inches wider than the BMW Vario bags, but not by much (when the Varios were fully expanded).

Not sure I agree with you that they weren't well thought out, they do have a new version that has a cutout for the exhaust, that helps pull them in a bit.

We'll just have to see after riding with them for a bit if I feel they are too wide (heck I thought the vario bags were too wide after coming off the Ulysses with the Buell branded H&B bags ... with the underneath exhaust, the bags were mounted snug against the frame).

There is a lot of irony in that statement!

Personally I think his bags are fine, so long as he is aware of his width when riding he should be fine!
