Thumb 2005 V-Strom DL1 100k write up

other than regular maintenance and replacement of normal wear items such as tires, brake pads, chain & sprockets, battery, the bike runs perfect and has never let me down.. at 100k miles I'm knocking out a yearly average of 46 mpg. (see fuelly link below) and the inside of the air box is clean & dry. in addition, I'm still running original stock bearings, suspension, brake rotors, fuel pump & filter, clutch & basket, and a 07 pure stock ECU. i give this bike a grade of A+ .. undoubtedly the best bike ive ever owned. IMHO, i contribute my good luck to,
1. the OverDrive Trannie, for 30% less wear & tear on engine.
2. the use of mc specific motor oil.
3. use of regular automotive grade fuel with the highest AKI rating.
4. street use only. no dirt or trails.

Congratulations! What do you mean by the overdrive tranny? A change in the countershaft sprocket?

I was curious about what you meant with overdrive. I bought an 2007 Wee in late October. The previous owner installed a 16 tooth front sprocket. When I did get to ride it before winter, it seemed to be gear plenty high as I would rarely get out of 4th gear riding back roads.
I switch the sprocket back to stock over the weekend but have not had a chance to ride the bike.
Looking forward to spring. Will this winter ever end?

Mine had 96k when i totalled it. Replaced wheel bearings once, set valve clearances twice, and had an annoying issue with the throttle body sync for a couple months. Otherwise, it was so reliable it was boring. I think i need another one. RIP, Strom....

Awesome bikes. Happy motoring

The '05 DL1000 only had 5 gears? It never had a 6th gear. What are you referring to?

I also have an 05 DL1000. Only 75k on my bike. I cant see replacing it any time soon. It was dirt cheap, is pretty damn good at everything I ask it to do, very reliable. I suppose I could go out and pay $10000 more for a bike I may enjoy 10% more than the vstrom...but that would not be too bright given my financial situation. This thing is a no brainer for anyone on a budget. Have you seen what used DL1000's go for these days? Unreal value

I have an 07 DL650 with 110K on the odo.

Exact same story, gas, tires, chain, filters, oil, pads.

That's it.

Still doesn't use enough oil between 5K mile changes to have to add any and still gets 55mpg.

Want a new bike but cant justify selling this one, it just plain works.
