My Australia Journey!

Hello All!

New to the forum. This thread is about my adventure in Australia coming up in April.

I am renting a motorcycle in Melbourne and cruising up and around the east coast (up to Cairns) for about a month. I'm a 32 year old guy, work as an engineer, and just finished my Master's program so am taking this trip as a reward to myself! I grew up riding dirt bikes, and got my first street bike about 9 years ago. It's a Yamaha FZ1 and is what I ride almost every day to work. I have done all the maintenance and repairs myself, and she's treated me kindly in return!

I have just recently booked my plane tickets and have the reservation on the motorcycle down, so I am ready to start planning my trip some more and would love some input from you all.

I am landing in Melbourne on April 9 at 9pm. I am picking up the motorcycle from Garners Motorcycle the morning of April 10. It's a Yamaha Tenere 660 with side and top panniers. My plane back to the US leaves May 9 at 9am.

So, a breakdown of my itinerary (so far, still a work in progress):

Days .....Arrive ............ Depart
.......... ...... ...... ...... 9-Apr-13 ...... Melbourne - 9:10 pm
2 ...... 10-Apr-13 ...... 11-Apr-13 ...... Melbourne
1 ...... 12-Apr-13 ...... 12-Apr-13 ...... Melbourne to Sydney (550 miles)
3 ...... 13-Apr-13 ...... 15-Apr-13 ...... Sydney
1 ...... 16-Apr-13 ...... 16-Apr-13 ...... Sydney to Brisbane ( 575 miles)
1 ...... 17-Apr-13 ...... 17-Apr-13 ...... Brisbane
2 ...... 18-Apr-13 ...... 19-Apr-13 ...... Fraser Island (180 miles)
1 ...... 20-Apr-13 ...... 20-Apr-13 ...... Fraser Island to Mackay (450 miles)
2 ...... 21-Apr-13 ...... 22-Apr-13 ...... Mackay
1 ...... 23-Apr-13 ...... 23-Apr-13 ...... Mackay to Cairns (460 miles)
7 ...... 24-Apr-13 ...... 30-Apr-13 ...... Cairns
1 ...... 1-May-13 ...... 1-May-13 ...... Cairns to Mackay (460 miles)
1 ...... 2-May-13 ...... 2-May-13 ...... Mackay to Gold Coast ( 650 miles)
2 ...... 3-May-13 ...... 4-May-13 ...... Gold Coast
1 ...... 5-May-13 ...... 5-May-13 ...... Gold Coast to Sydney (525 miles)
1 ...... 6-May-13 ...... 6-May-13 ...... Sydney to Melbourne (550 miles)
2 ...... 7-May-13 ...... 8-May-13 ...... Melbourne
...... ...... ...... ......... 9-May-13 ...... Melbourne - 9:30 am

In total, its 28 days on a bike in Australia, but Ill also start off with a couple nights in Fiji (no motorcycle).

Theres a map of an idea of the route below. It will probably be around 5000 miles (8000km) in total. I plan to spend the most time in one place around Cairns to get some good diving in. Right now Im planning on a 2 (or maybe 3) night live aboard scuba trip.

Google Maps Route

Right now I think I'll head back the same way I head up, just because it's more populated, but I'm not sure...

So, why am I here? Well, I want your help with this trip! As of now, I am going by myself as none of my friends or family back in the states are crazy enough to partake on this journey with me.

I plan to avoid hotels as much as possible, and am looking into CouchSurfing/AirBnB/hostels/camping to meet my needs. So, I am looking for places to stay that can offer a safe place to park the bike overnight. I am also looking for nice rides, nice beaches, good sites, cool places, and most importantly friendly Aussies to meet and hang out with! So, if you're up to helping on these fronts, let me know!

Should you probably post this in the Australia forum as well.

I see you are coming in mid week so I can't offer to show you around.

Cairns to Melbourne in three days!! That's 1000 kms a day.

x2

I'd be trying to stretch that out to 5 days, and spend a bit less time in Melbourne before you leave (not bagging Melbourne - I live here!).

If you're determined to do it in three days, you could go Cairns -> Melb down the guts (Charters Towers, Charleville, Bourke, Griffith, Shepparton) instead of along the coast, which would make it easier, but it'd be as boring as batshit (on the bright side, they're not your tyres you're squaring off! )

That's big daily miles for a Tenere. After about 300 a day on mine my butt is hating is me ! Get a cheap flight to Cairns and spend a week carving up Tasmania

Oops that was an older itinerary. The current plan is 4 days each way.

If you do the Gold Coast on your way north there would be no need to come back south by the same route and you could go down the middle as others have suggested. You would then see a whole other part of Oz.

If you'd like a riding buddy around the Gold Coast and up to Fraser, let me know, I'm on the Gold Coast and would be keen for a ride for a couple of days to show you around a bit.

Hey thanks! Definitely looking for locals to show me around.

I was looking at the more direct route away from the coast, but just had concerns in terms of how far apart stops would be, and since I'd be by myself, getting into a jam so far away from everything. Do you think that's a big issue? Do you know what the best stops would be?

Unless you were to get way out in the sticks (which you don't have time to) you will find fuel stops no more than about 200km apart. As long as you pay attention to the distances between towns you really shouldn't have a problem.

Ya really can't beat little outback town Pubs for accommodation and a feed.
I really enjoy the Nindigully Pub in southern Queensland.

Echuca on the NSW Vic border is quite a nice spot

and there's so many to choose from

If you'd like a tour guide/ riding partner for a few days around southern Qld send me a PM.
