Looks like the direction I'm headed.

The Harley is no longer in my garage and the Certified Check has already been deposited so I just need to find the 690 and if it's anything like my 990 I'm going to probably have to travel to another State to get her.

One more thought - pick similar bike your friends are using. Otherwise it will still always be a compromise where to ride
It will not apply if you ride only solo of course.

The big vs medium vs small KTM question comes up a lot.

After getting too many bikes set up just right and then selling them to try something different only to miss them later.............. I've found out there is really only one answer

I put my Deposit on a 2013 690 Enduro R on Feb 8. Dealer says the next KTM delivery will be the 690s. Last week the 990 Bajas came in. Patience grasshopper. I have been looking at numerous forums on setting up the 690. First upgrade will be exhaust. So many options... what would you suggest for < $500?

Same story here, deposit put down in January, still no ETA from my dealer. I am ok waiting if I have a target date but when they say "they are on allocation, we don't know when we will get one" week after week for 2 months , I am fed up. There is no excuse in the modern world to not be able to track orders, period.

The reason my frustration is pertinent to this thread is because if I yank my deposit tomorrow, I am going 400 miles this weekend and buying a 500 EXC - my 2nd choice to the 690, but every day I wait is a day I am not riding, and my buds are riding, and rubbing it in..... I hope that 500 can do some highway miles.

Oh, and I have a pile of brand new parts for the 690 in the shop, which won't fit the 500 - flea market here they come.

I called KTM USA about 2 weeks ago. The guy could only tell me he heard the 690 delivery date is the last part of March through April. My local KTM dealer said theirs are expected in April. So we are on deck. Hang in there. What parts did you get?

If you are a true adventure rider meaning that you love both on and off road exploration and you'll do whatever it takes to get somewhere whether it be slab or dirt then I think the 690 is the bike for you. Its the bike I would choose if that was my only riding goal. Tight and tough single track is easily doable, too. You won't be hindered at all by the size of the bike.

I have two loves though: motocross and adventure riding with only enough cash for one bike. I chose the 500 because in addition to adventure riding I also wanted the option to line up on the gate at my local mx track and roost some kids. I would never want to attempt a 90ft triple on a 690 but the 500 does it with ease. I stiffened it up to handle it but seriously the 500 handles just like my crf450r did only I get to also drive up to OK and AR and explore the ouchita national forest for days.

Great collection. Had a 125 Penton. It was one of my dream bikes. I wish I kept those cool old bikes...
What upgrades have gone into your 690? Appreciate any advice for a new KTM 690 owner (waiting on delivery).

One other thing when I look at a 690 I want it. For me it would be my ultimate adventure bike. Not to big and not too small but just right. However when I read the 690 forum I get really discouraged. Seems like people always having one issue or another with something going wrong.

I am toying with this exact option also! After selling my 300 exc for the 690 12 model ( one bike does it all ) I am learning it's all a compromise! I can see myself owning 2 bikes shortly one being a 350 exc!

Thanks for the encouragement, I will hang a bit longer, but that 500 is calling..... Parts accumulated so far; Wolfman top rear rack, Wolfman side racks, Flatland Racing skidplate, CJ Designs billet fuel filler neck and gas cap, FMF Q4 slip on. Also planning on the KTM touring windscreen.

The 500 always interested me and the decision to go with the 690 was a tough one (and who knows, if I get fed up enough with the wait, I still might end up with the 500). For folks who would use the 500 as a daily rider (to and from work), some highway to get to the mountains, and also lots of desert riding - how do you find the maintenance intervals? Too frequent? I guess you gotta pay to play eh?

My dealer already have gotten their first shipment of the 690. The bad is they only got 1 and I'm 3rd lol, guess I'm second now! So if your 1st or 2nd with the deposit yours will be here soon :)

My dealer here in Denver got 1 this week, will get 5 in April and the rest in August.

Of course I'm #2 on the waiting list.
