So I'm getting this 2001 XR250R I bought ready to go for my nephew. Today I changed the oil. Drained the frame reservoir, no big deal. Pulled the drain plug for the motor and out came the oil. A lot of oil. When it was over I had drained a full gallon of oil out of the bike. Gotta love the dry sump motors. Now I know why I found so much old oil dumped on the frame & motor.

What kind of problems would this much oil create? Strangely enough when I was running the bike to warm up the motor no oil came out of the breather hose even though I was running the motor at a fairly high RPM.

Also this being a 2001 model, the end cap doesn't lend itself well for modifying for better flow. in fact I think the S/A piece is pinned/welded to the cap by Honda. Any suggestions?

I'm going to be replacing the oil and seals in my forks next week..

i don't have a seal driver but have seen people use a piece of PVC pipe successfully, I'm wondering though does anyone know the dimensions of the special tool required to hold the inner fork cartridge? you need to hold the cartidge from rotating in order to undo the compression bolt from the bottom of the fork.

When I got my XR250R and did the first oil change my jaw dropped. I drained out 5 liters! The kid obviously had no idea how to check the oil. Surprisingly there was no damage and the bike runs like a good ol' XR should. If it gives you any piece of mind you can check out the ride report in my signature line. That trip was 1300 miles and I'm sure I have put about 3k miles on the bike total with no problems. Make sure the valves are adjusted and go!

Hi all,

So I have a nice Devol skid plate that I'm not going to be needing.. It's used but in great shape, few dings and scratches from normal use but nothing out of the ordinary. I will snap a few pics later to show it but figured I'd post now in case anyone is interested.. Looking to get about $90 and I'll cover the shipping. This is much nicer than the generic moose/utah/msr plate.. and mounts up very easily as well.

You guys are killing me with all the pics and stories of those great looking XR-250R's.

I got rid of mine about 5 years ago to buy my DR-650 and while I do get to ride a lot more, I really really really miss my XR.

My 1996 had the 280 kit, Scotts rear disc guard, aluminum bars, Thumper Racing bar risers, wide pegs and a bunch of other mods I can't even remember.

I really miss trail riding and am going to start looking for another one.

Here is a short trip down memory lane. Look closely and you can probably see my tears.

Gotta gloat..... 96 XR250R, could use new levers and grips, seat cover, few odds n ends. But for $300? And it runs great!

Went a little overboard on a few things but whatever.

Big thanks to my friend JT for helping me sort out the wiring. In hind sight, I should have just bought a bunch of colored wire and ran everything individually instead of using the Tusk wiring kit. I didn't wire up the turn signals and it took a while to sort out what is what because Tusk doesn't give you a color coded diagram of which wires are which because they assume you are buying the whole kit and not just the harness. Added another connection inside the tail light so you have running light and brake light.

BTW, I currently don't have a key for the bike. I plan to just carry a heavy duty bike lock. We also isolated the wiring to the spark plug from everything else so if I get a short, I should be able to still ride the bike.

Nice job tjrockit! I had the same plans for my XR until I got sidetracked by a deal I couldn't pass up on a WR250R.

Why didn't you end up going with the WPS combo tail/brake/plate light?

this is my '03 model.



17,000km's on the odometer and going strong, rebuilt the forks today, new HD tubes, sprockets, x-ring chain, oil change, valve clearances checked, brake fluid flushed and she'll be ready for a 3 week long 3,500km trip i'm doing.

I have a WPS on my XR650L. Unless it comes in a different size that I couldn't find, it is a smaller casing so I didn't like the look of it. Plus I just liked modifying the other one to work.

4strokesonly.com has a replacement lens but I've tried contacting them with no response so I don't even know if they are still in business.

I also considered the Acerbis Dual Sport Tail Light, but the price went WAY up on it, so I blew it off. I also didn't know if it would fit under my rack.

I'm not sure I understand. Does the WPS 650L combo light fit the 250?
