Here is a pic of my 2006 DL1000 I bought last April. It came with upgraded suspension and handlebars. I also traded seats from a 2011 DL650, so it's like riding a "new" bike.
So, I am thinking of buying a set of more dirt /gravel road oriented tires. Currently it is running tourence exp front and back. What would be a step up from the metzlers, and still be good at 65mph?

Vstrom consideration
First time adv bike buyer... looking at the vstrom 650. Question is, are you generally better buying the factor adv model with the adv add on's or the standard model and add on yourself? In other words, is the higher purchase price worth the value of these upgrades? Are the factory side bags aero efficient and so on and so forth? I would be buying all the factory add ons plus center stand, heated grips, skid plate, bark busters etc. I can get a slightly used 2012 650 factory adv model with less than 500 miles on it for around $7k. I really like the Triumph Tiger, I just dont want to be North of $10k with goodies etc.
Many Thanks! |

I have a 2012 Adventure model and I am very happy with it. As a turnkey adv bike, it is excellent. I added a few other items such as a center stand and a Hyde skid plate. However, I could have filled the cases with gear and ridden it across the country just as it came from the dealer. I think $7k for that bike with <500 miles is a good deal.

I also bought the 2012 Adv model. I have added a Tourtech skidplate and hand guards. I am also changing the foot pegs and adding risers. Other than that it is pretty sweet out of the box.

2012 Vstrom service bulletin DONE :)
As most v 1000 owners know there have been known issues with drive ability for years. Before I purchased my 2012 I forcasted these known problems to my sales guy and he said they will fix it if this curse struck my bike. It died 3 times on the way home (10 miles) when rolling off the gas at stop signs. It had the hiccups at 2700- 3000 rpm like many others. I rode it like this for a few months, then my dealer called, saying there is a fix. They will replace the ECM ( different part #) and iridium plugs. I read other stromers ( on another site) saying this really did fix their bike. I took mine in today, purposely making it surge and hiccup on a known piece of road on the way to the dealer. After the "fix", same piece of road I could not duplicate the problem. I know its early days but so far so good. I can not speak to fuel consumption differences if any, I know that these new ECMs still have to meet epa regulations so it may not be terribly rich. I think the off idle hesitation is gone as well and possibly smoother throughout the rev range.
Im glad Suzuki finally addressed the problem for 2012s but I don't know if this will work for previous years. |

I got my ECM replaced yesterday. Smooth at the regular hiccup rpm range. I didn't have time for them to put the plugs in so I'll do that later on. So far do good

I just got off the phone with the service guy, and yeah he gave me the symptoms and such and fixes already discussed. He did not give me a #.

Good again, as do many golf outings and headlights are very expensive, I decided to make one and the result is as follows:

VStrom luggage question
Considering a new DL1000, and need to decide between the basic DL and the "Adventure" model, with the bags. Having owned a 2006 VStrom a few years ago, I was less than impressed with the baggage-especially the top box which basically fell apart shortly after I bought the bike with 20k on it. The side bags were ok, but not great.
The difference between the two is about $600. What to do? Basic model and pony up for better luggage? Or go for the "Adventure" model? Thanks! SE |

I also recently purchased a leftover 2012 DL1000. It hiccuped or whatever at about 2700rpm. Told my dealer and he called back in an hour and said parts are ordered. I hope it goes that easy for everyone.
