Regarding falling in the dirt...
My bike spends more time on the ground when riding in the dirt, but that doesn't mean that I do as well. Most of my dirt get-offs are at low speeds. There have been times when I've just stepped away from the bike and was still on my feet when the bike went down. You learn a lot more about maintaining traction by riding in the dirt than street only. I'm still of the opinion that you'll be a better street rider with some dirt experience. It works for me and for some of the best riders that I know.
