NM FR150, time for a ride??

Thinking of riding FR 150 from Beaverhead down to Mimbres then over Emory Pass to Hillsboro one of these weekends. Today I rode out to Beaverhead on my C14 (being retired is good ), 300+ miles from Las Cruces. Didn't see any snow and I got up to 7800', FR150 only gets a couple hundred feet higher so it should be clear and dry. Waiting to see what day someone else might make it, any interest?

Can get up there early this year Barko1. We rode up it a ways and it was dry and dusty. It could be done anytime in late March or April this year. We will likely ride the OR bikes up there in Mid April with bikes trailered up to Mimbres from Deming so as not to needlessly destroy good tires.

There may be an OR bike coming from El Paso and was considering riding it . I'd unload at the Sierra County Airport just off I25 exit 82 and then do a loop through Hillsboro. A couple years ago I went in from Mimbres when it was nasty mud , Ended up having to unbolt a fender from a little Yamaha, a bit of a mess.

Looking to find some warm riding weather next weekend (3/28-3/31). Was considering heading to Ruidoso area since it's a straight shot south from Colorado Springs. But that road look intriguing on the map.....

Not sure what weekend we'll do this, stay posted. Access to the Gila is at exit 82 from the South, from the North I think it is 181 a few miles North, either works. Have parked right by there at the Sierra County airport if in saving knobby mode. Tons of rides in the area, Monticello Canyon if you like getting wet. Chloride Creek for a rocky road up towards FR150. There is a great campsite one mile from the S. end of 150.

The best place to park is right on NM 35 about 1 mile S of the mouth of FR150 (AKA Wall Lk. Rd). You hardly wreck any rubber at all going up to Beaverhead. It is 96 glorious miles round trip up to Beaverhead and back to your trailer. Bring a picknick lunch. If one wants to ride on pavement you could cut over on NM59 over to Winston/ Tor C area to get home to Cruces. Way too much pavement coming from Silver even if you take the Georgetown Rd. cut-off.This pavement here is a tire killer with all the rock in it.

4 of us are leaving Silver City on March 30....
taking 7 days to ride the Divide trail to Chama and back...
Maybe an alternate return route that stays south of Chama...
When we get back to Silver City,we'll have a full day to ride up to Mogollon...
I called the Forest Service last week and was told that 159 is still closed...
How much trouble are we asking for if we sneak around the gate and head east to 61?

None skinny..... We did this last yr. It is tricky to get your bike under the bar East of Mogollon 3 mi though. You need some teamwork to lay the bike down and get the bars under as there is no other way to get by there. Over by Snows Lk end you just ride around the end and start on FR 28 toward Beaverhead.A long way w/o gas so make sure you are full in Alma or Glenwood first.Closest gas once you get up there is Reserve or Winston. No rangers will bother you though... just make sure you have a spark arrestor.

Thanks for the info...that's pretty much the route I had planned
159 to NF-142 to Loco Mountain Rd to Cr-22 to Hwy 61
We'll have 1 KTM 990, so dragging it under a gate may be a no go...

Yes ,I think a 990 would be tough to get under there.................. They really don't open that road until mid May for vehicle traffic.Sorry man. It is a great road. You can take FR28 all the way to Mimbres, Winston or the Monticello Box. It just goes and goes up there. Then you hook into the Cibola NF on the NE of it over by I-25.

I don't have tracks, GPS incompetent, just keep you head down and get back here healthy. Afghanistan sounds like a nasty place, I had the pleasure of visiting Vietanm in 68. Bought a nice bike as soon as I got home
