Before you invest more effort, time, and money,

The best thing about all this is that you pretty much have a blank canvas.. You can do whatever you want at this point. And depending on what you have stockpiled, or what is available and what you are comfortable with will ultimately drive your decision, but be mindful that some choices have already been made for you... ie: it may be the cheapest and easiest to buy another engine, crack it open, and upgrade things before they break, and literally start with a fresh motor with 0 miles.

Swapping to TDI is nice, but totally not worth it. The effort, and replacement cost trump every reward. Ultimately, you are better of selling it, and buying one already converted.

I faced the same dilemma when I decided to replace the engine in my Vanagon. I have already invested so much time, effort and money, that my choice has already been made for me -- another aircooled Type4, even-though a watercooled Subaru would have been feasible, but that would've meant I have to part with a $500 exhaust, and other new items I already had for the Type4.

Simply because I live in a HOA controlled neighborhood and it would block my other cars in. (and the drive way is a hill). So it needs to at least look like it runs and be easily movable on the hill to access other cars.

Have you tried to find a Eurovan TDi statside? They pretty much don't exist.

I know of 3 conversions. 2 are full campers, easily $50k+ and not for sale. The last one is an older model turquoise weekender that isn't complete yet.

If they would just make cars like I want them dammit .... . Or at least bring them to the USA.

I considered listing it for sale this morning and shopping for a Domestic van of any sort. That idea was met with stern discouragement from my wife. I'm an equal opportunity car lover domestic and foreign...... They wife...... Not so much

After reading a billion threads on the Internet about it! Which are all true of course. I dove in with a shoelace and some sand paper.

After a quite a bit of sanding at various grades of fine paper, all of the stuff I was feeling yesterday with my fingernail is gone. Apparently all bearing material stuck to the crank. There is some visual discoloration in spots that "looks" like groves but can't be felt at all with a finger or fingernail. That and the crank still measures in spec with the other rod journals at every single spot I can measure it.

Starting to think with a bunch more polishing to a mirror shine that it might just work for awhile. These journals were all about .007 under spec so they will run barely loose with stock bearings in them. So the super tiny imperfections will also have room to move a bit.

Hard to get a good picture under tha van with a phone. Most of what looks like its on the rod journal in the picture is a reflection. The other discoloration a on the journal can't be felt at all. Opinions?

As mentioned before, I'd get a hold of whatever polishing cloth your local machine shop uses on their cranks. Then, continue your efforts.

The discoloration is hard to determine. That could be as major as the hardness being worn through or simple as temperature discoloration. It'd be great, if you could get an engine machinist under there to take a look. Offer him a premium 6-pack, or whatever, for his time.

I think you're on the right track of bearings, oil pump, and minimal other parts, though.

There will certainly be more polishing. I just ran out of time today.

These motors are popular to turbocharge and take 400-600hp well so I'm not overly worried about the discoloration part of it being weaker.

The hardness would relate to wear characteristics of the surface; not the actual strength of the crank. Once that surface is compromised, it'll disintegrate in a hurry, should there not be sufficient oil film for the bearing to run on. Maybe, you knew that and just misunderstood where my concern was.

Fix on the cheap AND look for a replacement engine. If all goes well, he could drive it till if/when it loses a rod and have the new engine ready to go. Bearings, oil pump and 1 qt of atf before every oil change (but not running in it for a week!).

Kinda what I'm thinking.

If it goes together and runs it may be for 1 minute or another 100k miles.

But it buys me time to search for other options. Not a daily driver by any stretch so its not like I have to rely on it at the moment.

I did start getting evil ideas about jut converting it to an LS motor and solid axles.

I follow that dude's YT channel. It's absolutely crazy that he can get nearly 600rwhp, with just heads, cam, injectors, piggyback electronics, and turbo. His Fairmont was setup the same way, of course, with an LS swap. It ran low 10's.

Basically I've narrowed it down to two options at the moment.

A) Replace with a long/short block 24v 2.8L Vr6 from a 2001+ Jetta, Eurovan etc. This is basically just a direct replacement for what's in there now.

B) A 3.2L VR6 short block from a Touareg, A3,R32, etc. Will require a touch of custom work but I gain 0.4L of displacement and a longer stroke.

Then I can take my time to collect the TDI or Turbo I5 parts.
