Some of the old "make and break" engine parts found on the shoreline of these remote fishing rooms come from the engines used in early 20th century fishing boats. They were single cylinder 2 strokes. Back when engines were simple and reliable as a heartbeat.

The foundry in Lunenburg, NS still has the patterns and will build you a make or break Acadia marine engine on order. Last I checked, the engine cost as much as a new sedan. They haven't cast one for some time, but they did do one for a collector in the '80's.



I used to have several stationary gas and diesel engines, including a 5 hp. "Waterloo Boy." The engine weighed over 700 lbs, and sounded like a cannon going off when it "made" spark. On this side of the border, they are known as "hit or miss" engines also.

One of the advantages of the "make and break" 2T engines, beyond their hammer-like reliability, was the savings in weight and complexity in not needing reversing gear. If reverse was needed, the savvy fishermen would either cut the spark or the fuel, and let the engine almost stall. A swift kick on the heavy flywheel would throw the engine into life in the opposite direction. The system honestly doesn't care in which direction it's running, unlike modern variants.

You had to be pretty good to reverse an old 2T marine engine. If your timing wasn't spot on, you lay in the bottom of the boat with a broken leg, sometimes days or weeks from medical care. The flywheels on the old engines were enormously heavy, which is why the videos show an engine of minimal horsepower (by modern standards) propelling a boat along at a very fair clip. Horsepower doesn't move things. Torque does. My old 5 hp Waterloo Boy ran a sawmill with a 36" blade not far up the road from here. The mill closed after WWII, and the engine sat partially buried in the duff for about 45 years. A local Frenchman found it, and dragged it out with his tractor, and brought it back to life. I bought it from him.

The fella also painted it a particularly nauseating lavender colour. He had a can of paint in inventory, and used it.

It was a a four-stroke "hit or miss" engine with a magneto, which is a brilliant system. When the engine wasn't under load, the spark and the fuel were cut off. The engine would idle from the tremendous weight of the two cast-iron flywheels until power was needed again, at which point the fuel and the spark would both come on with a bang an the noise of a cannon firing.

It had a five-inch bore and an enormous stroke. When it fired after idle, it would lift all 700+ pounds of itself off the ground.

I think we're missing some romance with fuel injection and electronic ignition.

I'd love to have a dory with the Acadia 4 HP though.

I seem to remember meeting the author back when while working on the trail, but haven't read it. Once I wade through my pile of Newfoundania, I'll give it a go.

I think you've nailed it Ace. It's not about keeping it twisted on all the time. It's far more about the folks and the history than you can imagine. You can go coast-to-coast and not see a damned thing. This one's not so much about the ride as the stopping.
