Tachometer acting weird

So replaced the fuel pump with a facet pump and the bike's working great except the the tacho constantly reads 7000 rpm, then when the bike's turned off the needle instead going back to zero goes the other way and sits beyond 12000 rpm. So I disconnected the battery and it's still reading the same...I don't understand! Should there be 2 earth leads connected to the battery(as someone suggested) as I only connected one, maybe this is causing it to short-circuit. Otherwise something else occurred when putting the bike back together??
