Nice

That was very helpful indeed. Thanks! From what it shows the difference from 16/42 to 17/45 is very small. So looks like that may be a good option for me to try out.

Biggest spread on one chain.

Yup... super old thread, but I thought I'd share my findings on the topic.

I have a 1999 Enduro, and wanted two sets of gearing - one ratio similar to stock, and one that got me cruising faster at lower RPM's. Also, I wanted the largest spread I could get [within reason] without changing the chain.

So, I crunched the numbers, and I've been running this setup for a little over a year now.

16/38 - 1.58% higher RPM's than stock [@ 60mph]
15/40 - 9.52% lower RPM's than stock [@ 60mph]

This necessitates a shorter chain than stock [108 links, I think].

This works great for how I use the bike lately [supermoto wheels around town and on the twisties (15/40) / stock wheels with knobbies for trips to the OHV park (16/38)].

If stock is 16/42, and you're talking about stock 18" rear, 21" front wheels, your RPMs should decrease with 16/38, not increase. Or are you basing off something other than 16/42?
