Still tons of snow in Southern Ontario. I'm making a point of taking up Groundhog hunting this year.

No snow in Western Australia! I can pretty much say that 365 days of the year!

Newb check in.

Newb checking in.
Been a member for a few years now since I first started coveting a KLR, but finally joining the ranks.
Pulled the trigger on a recent trade at a local dealer the other day, while I was in shopping for a helmet because I was supposed to go test ride another KLR I'd found on Kijiji (kinda like a boondocker's Craigslist for the uninitiated.)

Brought the old mule home tonight.
It's a 2004 with 24,000km (15k miles), Red.
Was bone stock when I laid eyes on it.
The previous owner didn't ride it hard, so it was in pretty good condition, but needed some TLC.

The dealer put new tires on (Dunlop K750 rear and Trailwing T21 front), New wheel and countershaft sprockets and chain, fresh fork oil and seals, front an rear brake pads (prev owner sprayed it down with oil before storing for winter) oil and filter, and they were waiting on the parts to replace the rear shock & spring before a new owner took ownership.

Put a deposit that day and went back this weekend to confirm the suspension work, and paid off the remainder.
Seems they replaced the shock/spring with a Progressive 465 series.
I'm guessing at $400 cdn, retail, it was probably cheaper than their price for an OEM unit.
I haven't read any good reviews on it, but I figured it's probably at least as good at OEM.

When the tech took it for a PDI run this morning, he said the front brake felt a little spongy and the grips were "done", so I got new Scott grips and a brake fluid flush as well.

I figured I did alright for $2600.

Now saving for bash plate, crash bars, doohickey, IMS pegs, LED conversion, hand guards, progressive front springs, knobbies and luggage.

Sounds like a swinging deal to me,I paid 2500 for a very untouched clean 2001 with 9100 miles on the ODO,look into the Doo,check the valves and ride it like the brutal beast it is,hey I'm not sure if it works on red KLR's but my green one looks almost new using Mothers Back to Black it really brought the plastics back to new, although she does run prouder with a sheen of offroadieness to her, let's people know it's not a garage queen.Welcome aboard!

My front wheel bearings are getting noisy and my shifter is starting to strip out... To the wd40 and bailing wire!

In all seriousness though this makes me want to put an order in with pro cycle which I have been avoiding because I want everything

Quick question about the infamous Doohickey. If I do it now, will it void the warranty on the bike, or should it be left until the warranty expires then replace it? It appears the general consensus is that the Doo needs replaced!

I'm under the impression that as long as its done in the first couple thousand miles its good and will not void warranty. Kawasaki made improvements on the Gen II bikes and its mostly just the spring that needs replacing.

But I am brand new to KLR ownership myself. The experts will know better than I do.

Pulled my doo last weekend. Not to happy with what I found. I'm thinking the PO pulled the doo bolt and the doo dislodged and bounced around the engine. A side from that the starter gear shims were mostly gone from being stacked on the case side of the gears. My pickup coil caught most of the debris.[IMG]

Ugly stuff, just did mine and was lucky enough to discover someone else along the way had done mine already,I had Mikes stuff in hand so I just swapped old for new and as the original style spring was in there I did the torsion spring.looking forward to many good miles now.

Tusk gasket set question

Assembling my engine last weekend, I broke into the spare gasket set I had. Tusk brand from fleabay. I only used the base gasket and tensioner gasket-I don't think I would personally trust the head gasket, but that's me.
My question is, what is the purpose of the two large(like 4") O-rings in the kit? I haven't split the case, just the top end. Where do these go?

There are two O-rings between the sleeve and the cylinder; one at the top and one at the bottom. These keep coolant separate from oil as the cylinder and liner (sleeve) expand and contract. These are about 2mm cross-section by about 105mm diameter.
