Something to consider here, we changed from 17 to 16 to smooth the old doll out at lower RPM and our milage got better!

The only thing I can think of is we are now using a lesser throttle opening to attain the same speed but pretty much we are two up all the time with house and contents on ... note air dam , maybe not so applicable with FI but something to thro in the mix that having the 16 tooth may not necessarily punish your MPG.

Bloody good offer from grinns .. that is what make this place really worth while

I have Q4s

Ok, I know my 950 SE is carbed..which I prefer over FI.. but I want to contribute (maybe brag) here. I got my SE with Q4s but no spark arrestors. It was all messed up by a local shop..jetted way wrong, lots of air leaks. I had a local wizard jet it and seal up the leaks, added FMF spark arrestors and geared down to 16T. Result: goes like double hell, idles great, runs smooth, gets 40-42 MPG, runs 4 bars all the time, and is considerably quieter. A properly tuned bike will be smooth and cool and run great. What is not to like about this bike? I've never bought a bike for gas mileage, just for fun and it delivers on all fronts.

Dyno the thing!

We are a Power Commander tuning center Q-4 slipons should not hurt mpg if the bike is tuned to the right AFR 13.7-1 is good for power and mpg with the PC-V you can have 2 maps one for power and one for mpg in order to tune the bike you must be able to read your AFR and load control the bike.

My bike is gettin about the same. 07 990 w leo's custom map. I just cleaned out my map sensors today heard that could fix the mileage. We will see.

Anyway this 1mm holes get clogged and I used a needle tip as seen to clear them out. I don't know if it is going to make a difference but I feel like the bike was smoother after.

Custom Map = Strange Mileage.

On my 2008 (RIP) I was getting 25 average in the dirt with the Akro map.

2011 model, I get up to 38 HWY.

It's all over the board....

I have a carbed 990.

I have been keeping a real close tab on my fuel usage.

Worst = Ultra technical heavy sand, heaps of throttle = 11 mpg
Best = tar cruising = 39 mpg
Ride like a twat on tar = 25mpg

Interesting. My '08 990 has the stock 17T and I'm about to lower it to a 16T mostly to make it more Wheelie-Happy. Glad to hear my MPG may not suffer.

It's the map, forget everything else you listed, it won't change MPG. When I asked the dealer to put the ACK map in my bike (before TuneECU was available) it took me from 35~40mpg to 25mpg. Go back to the stock map, it will be fine with aftermarket pipes and won't run lean, plus give you far better MPG.

My recommendation, go back to the dealer and ask for stock map, or read up on TuneECU, and load a stock map.

Good advice go the Tune ECU route.

If doing the leaner thing (which you will be heading too) make sure your SAS is blanked off or it will burn the packing out of your mufflers and ruin them.

Thanks guys...great stuff.

DSM8 ...I agree and just relocated my beloved M Coupe into the driveway to make room for more work on the big twin. It was like fingernails on a chalkboard every time I heard myself say I was going to a dealer for an oil change.

Grinns... thanks a ton for the PM. I'll ping you and head over to the dark side.

Lotsa good info

Thanks DSM8 also for this info. Might pm you for more info. I'm only a few cities away from you.

I also have a new (to me) 08 990S. 3k miles, Akropovic and gas miles sucks ass. Performance, however, is through the freaking roof. Bike tells me to haul ass or get off. After topping off the fuel, I got about 120 miles before the fuel light came on. Granted, I'm in the mountains, but I thought I would get better mileage. Bike was worked on at Eric's in Pasadena, but, he retired and moved and I don't know where Brett went. I'll keep an eye on this post for more info.

Yep. The cookie cutter performance maps all seem to be around 25 mpg. Stock map will work just fine.

2007 with akros & akro map

Only chance I get to ride it is a 4 mile commute each way each day.

Lucky if I get 75 miles a tank. Crazy I know.

Cleaned the MAP Sensor, it did nothing for MPG. Going back to stock map.
