I hate to reopen this can of worm OIL THREAD but I'm ready to do my 600 mile service on my new 2013 1200 GSA (cam head oil/air cooled, dry clutch) and the manual recommends 15W50 SJ JASO MA2. It does not recommend Synthetic or Mineral oil. Why the change from 10w40 ?? All the dealers I called recommend to use the BMW 15w50 synthetic after 600miles. One even told me it's the best oil for the wet clutch and the gears in the transmission.
That just made me decide to make my own choice and just rely on your guy's opinions. I dont want to use synthetic yet, at least not till 12k miles. I think I'll just go with the Castrol GTX 10W40. I still use Castrol GTX 20w50 in my 1150GS and I don't have any oil consumption or availability issues. I have tried to find Castrol ACTIV 4T 15w 50 (Mineral oil) but it's not available so I was wondering what you people think??

Could you, please, quote what your Users Manual says about oil?
In Verbatim, and I will update the GSpot FAQ.

I assume the number of oil-threads on the wethead will be no fewer than for the earlier models

The manual says on page 135:

"Products recommended by BMW Motorrad: BMW Motorrad High Performance Oil SAE 15W-50, API SJ / JASO MA2"

"BMW recommends CASTROL"

Maybe that page in the manual was meant for the liquid cooled 2013 GS ??

My 2013 GSA oil cooled bike was serviced at 600 miles by LS in Austin, I spoke with head mechanic after service he said 20w50 was put in bike at service and to run it with 20w50. I know little about these bikes, but mine made ticks and weird noises before and after switch to 20w50, the head mechanic as some may know him is a 30+ year veteran of boxers and I think he has master status. That being said I broke in my GSA by the book and after service it has 1500 miles of city and high speed running and I havent had to add any oil yet. That makes me happy, and since summer in west Texas will be 100* plus I will leave it. Next week is BB trip, and I am gonna put some miles on it and will be interested to see how much oil it uses. Best wishes. D.

Do you know if the 20w50 they put in is synthetic or mineral oil?

The mechanic told me to wait a while before running synthetic oil in GSA. I cant remember if he gave me a time and mileage line or not. I usually get a new bike after 4 or 5 years, and I have 5 years of warranty so I wont worry about it too much. D.

FWIW. I had the dealer do my 600 service, went with whatever it came with until 3k, and then switched to 10w50 full synth at 3k, 6k and last week at 12k with no I'll effects. I have a 2012 GS and buy my oil change kits from Beemer Boneyard.

Nothing about temperature-ranges?

Nothing about temperature ranges, would it harm anything to use the Castrol GTX 10w40 with an SJ rating?

I have looked into this, and the answer is no.
The wethead uses 5w-40 SL.

Well, the rating isn't that important; if you use a poorer oil you replace it more often.
But if the '10 needs 50-oil a 40 would be too thin.
That is worse.

How nice it was when everything used 10w-40 and could run on 20-50 in summer.

Should I just use the 20w50 mineral or switch to 15w50 synthetic that I can only get from the dealer? Sucks that they recommend an oil that's not that available.

Forgive me... I'm new to the BMW boxer... recently bought an '03 1150GS. I figured since it's a dry clutch and the engine oil is kept separate from the transmission oil, you could safely run any common "car oil" in the proper weight. Does anyone run Mobil-1 15w50 in their GS? Any reason why I shouldn't?
