Dual purpose tires on a R75/5

My R75/5 scrambler project is coming along nicely and now it's time to look at some dual purpose (or dualsport if you like) tires.

Tire sizes are: 3.25x19 front 4.00x18 rear.

I've been doing a lot of looking around and a fair bit of internet research but I've hit a bit of a problem: clearance to the swingarm on the R75/5 is tiny. I'm currently running Metzeler road tires and there is less than half an inch clearance. Putting most dual purpose tires on there may not work. I don't want to shell out money for tires that won't fit.

Has anyone else done this? What did you use? Any problems with swing arm clearance?

Background: I probably do 50-60% riding on roads. The road tires are ok on tight dirt or good gravel but are just plain scary on loose surfaces or mud/clay. I'd like to be able to increase the ability to ride on less certain surfaces. I'm not expecting to keep up with the KTMs.

Any advice gratefully accepted. Thanks

A while back there was a thread about a few dudes on /2s with dirt tires. They were using Shinko 244 and Continental TKC-80.

Have a look at the E07

129/80 18 clears the swing arm on R65s and R100 fat swing arm so should fit R75
100/90 19 is not a fat tyre and has a moderately steep Crown Radius Section so your fine control and tip in is not compromised.

TKC hook up on the edges better on loose surfaces once you start power sliding and are better but not great in muddy conditions.

The E07 will outlast the TKC are cheaper and handle much better on the road especially in wet conditions.
It's also much quieter on the road, TKCs are almost as loud as a full knobby

For the rear at least, Metzeller enduro 2, 4:00/18 A decent looking lug dual purpose.

No Metz for the front that I have seen, not to say there isn't one.

Avon Distanza has 4:00/18, 4.1/18, and 100/90/19 for the front. Not too luggy tho'

Shinko 705 in a 4.10 X 18 and a 110/80 -19. I did not research size changeover but the 705 may work very well for you if it'll fit.

I run heidenau k60 scouts on my r90. They're great. Not so great in the rain, though.

Back in the day I used Dunlop K70s or Goodyear DTs,mthey gave a little more grip on muddy south American roads.

Ran a set og Bridgestone Trailwings on my beater 1981 R100...for the backroads

Worked great on/off asphalt and pretty good in the wet:

Front 110/90-19 - ran at 36psi


Rear - 120/90 - 18 - ran at 32 psi




Were no rub issues front or rear.

Mitas E07s on the G/S, work fine wet or dry, road and dirt, and last at least 50% longer than anything else I've tried.
Will eventually have them on everything.

Dunlop TT100s on the R75/7 & B44 , suprisingly good on gravel roads for what looks like a road tire.

Distanzas, and Mitas E08s, work great too, but the Avons are $100- a pair more than E08s in Oz, and neither last like the E07s.

I'm using Dunlop K180's, they are 120-90x18, but they do a 100/90 too. Not as good as the K70 in gravel, but better off road and seriously good on seal and wet roads. But they won't last long, I've lost 2mm in 900km.
