If your car has less than 24,000 miles you qualify for lemon law:

http://www.keytlaw.com/az/lemonlawstatutes.htm#44-1261

You qualify based on more than 30 days out of service. I wouldn't even think about trading it in if it were mine. I'd call fiat and tell them you want to work it out amicably & leave the Attorneys out of it. Don't settle for anything less than a replacement new equivalent. If they don't cooperate, hire an attorney and go for a refund rather than replacement. When the Attorney wins fiat will have to pay his fees for you.

I speak from experience. I lemon lawed one motorcycle with an attorney, and lemon lawed one car by myself. Both vehicles were out of service for two to six months in one year's time.

In most states once you've started the process any additional use you get out of the car before settlement is free driving.

For the record.

This car has been resolved to my satisfaction.

I can't say too much other than attorneys were involved.

Hopefully my experience was the exception and not the rule, I expect that to be true.

Ahh, so you already had it worked out before you posted the horror story, because there's no way you got it handled in only one day.

Good to hear it's resolved. It's a shame when you have to get the attorneys involved because of some dealership personells incompetence.

The good thing is, your damn motor can't read. If it says oil on the container, it's pretty much OK to dump in there.... ED.

Correct, I didn't want to put a bunch of stuff out there while things were ongoing.

However the timeframe for a resolution was surprisingly short. I'd say 3 weeks overall.

Mind sharing any details on what finally happened? Sounded like they owed you a new transmission and some body work at the bare minimum...

FWIW, My Abarth has been flawless since I bought it last June. I don't drive it a ton because I have a lot of toys, so it's only got 4500 miles on it so far. I had it at the dealer once to have the PCM reflashed per a warranty "recall" and that went totally smoothly. Did the first oil change myself and am planning on rotating the tires this weekend.

To bisbonian......you should make the name of the dealership public knowledge. These turkeys are to be avoided......at all costs.
BTW, visited Bisbee on a rented Street Glide second week in February. What a cool little town. Overnighted in the Copper Queen. Really disappointed that I got no visit from the ghost.....you know which one....even left the Do Not Disturb sign off the door. I shall be back!

He likely can't divulge the details or the dealership name. This is due to the confidentiality/non disclosure agreements that are almost always stipulated in the settlement.

This is correct.

I can say that I drove home in a new car today (not a Fiat)

I went a little more mainstream and now have a slightly used Kia Soul. Lots of pep and although the gas mileage will suffer it turns out that my long work commute is coming to an end and I'll be tele-working for the foreseeable future.

The Soul was originally purchased by the original owner within a week of when I bought my Fiat last year and has about 800 fewer miles on it, pretty much an even swap which is what I was hoping for.

So how many people have come up to you so far doing the Kia rat dance?

I hope so. I really like them (the new 500s) and have always loved Fiats. My family has owned a 850 coupe and several X-19s. When I recently was in the market for a small car for the city, I looked into getting one but couldn't find either a 500 or a Mini for the price I wanted to pay for a car that I was going to be parking on NYC streets. Ended up with a low mile Smart Fortwo instead which I really like.

For some reason, Zipcars got rid all their Fiats a couple of months ago. (At least here in NYC) I made a few calls trying to find out why and hoping to score a deal on one of them to no avail. Hopefully it wasn't unreliability. I'd really like to see them stick in the USA. IMO they have some pretty cool products if they ever bring them here.

We've got about 17K miles on our 2012 500 Sport. No problems and we're outrageously happy with it.

I like it enough that I'm considering one for myself.

Nice Abarth, LuciferMutt.
