Cell phones and the Great White North

I have an AT&T Iphone and I am wondering if I will have any reception in Canada and Alaska. Because I am a cell phone addict and I use it for all kinds of things, I would even be willing to switch providers to be sure I have service. pk

Att

I too use ATT. When I went to Deadhorse and back last summer I found service in each of the major towns, tho no internet that wasn't wifi. Every town has Wifi somewhere and I ended up not making any calls so when I go back I will just get the texting package.

AT&T partners with Telus. Telus has coverage all across Canada. There are hardly any places that it does not reach. When I travel in the US, my cell just hooks into AT&T. I am sure that the reverse would be true. Probably best to check with AT&T to make sure and to find out if there are any hoops that you have to jump through.

I am on ATT and on my ride to Deadhorse the only places I remember with no cell reception were in someplace in Montana and Coldfoot on the way up the Dalton. Had reception in Deadhorse

Re: Verizon

I think you'll find Verizon works well in Alaska, and probably in Canada too, although I can't attest as to the latter. My local carrier in Alaska partners with Verizon for its nationwide roaming. With my nationwide plan I enjoy service all over North America.

Thanks for the reply. Just got off the line with VW and was informed I can text while in Canada without any additional charges, so that's cool, and really all I need.

Side note: You a COG member by any chance?

Did you check the coverage map of BC for the Telus network??? I could go for many hundred Kms in a few directions from here without coverage but for very few localities.

Was for many years but let membership drop. Still on the COG forum though. Right now I'm in Pennsylvania, getting ready to depart for Key West, then back home to Alaska - on my '94 Connie. Should be swinging through your part of the country in a couple of weeks, as I'm taking a lot of detours to visit old friends along the way - some probably for the last time.

If you are coming through before my departure date of June 22 look me up. Can offer a room for a night as well depending on the date...
