Wheely confused

So I'm about to replace my 12 sided rear '81 snowflake with a nice straight one.

Trouble is, I think the straight wheel I have is a '77 (77/6 stamped on spline side)
It has those raised humps in the spline cup area. It also has steel inserts.

What can I do with this wheel in order to use it on a '81?
Is it just a matter of grinding off those humps?
The wheel is very straight and clean.

Did a po toast his wheel bearings and have the inserts put in?

So close, yet so far.

Should be. That was BMW's published solution to using a newer finned FD on a pre-'81 bike. That's the same mismatch you're talking about.

Thanks Anton, I tried a basic fit up of the wheel and found that the fd did hit on those lumps, judging by the small amount of grease/grime left on the lump. The wheel would not turn at all.
An angle grinder is one of my favourite surgical instruments so all should be good there.

I was reading somewhere recently that the later snowflakes came with steel inserts?
If this wheel has been sleeved due to a spun bearing, it has been done well.

Jeff, the black wheels I have were earlier wheels, the rear had the "protrusions". Your choice of weapon should be your trusty angle grinder. That's what I did.You can see the remnants of some of them marked in red...

Thanks Steve, a 4" angle grinder shall be the choice here.

Imagine, a round back wheel. That will be something different.

On my '83 the center of the hub is steel all the way through. The outer bearing races sit on a steel shoulder that seems to be integral with the rest of the steel in the center. The bearing outer races come out their respective sides.

Make sure the wheel is the post-recall type with the ribbed spokes at the center.

Didn't the early snowflakes get recalled and replaced with the ones that had extra fins on the "spokes"?

That's for front snowflake wheels, excluding the 18" R65 front snowflake wheel.

I'm going to operate on a rear wheel.

I like the steel inserts. Much better idea.

It was only the 19" front wheels that got recalled.

Lugs removed and wheel on the bike.

Not too impressed with the tyre tho'
Michelin pilot active 4:00

Wheel is very good for running true.
Tyre on the other hand makes the wheel look buckled.
Bike on centre stand in 3rd gear at about 1500, The tyre appears to have a buckle!

I let the tyre down to about 10 lbs and rolled the bike backwards and forwards for a couple of wheel revolutions.
I pumped it back up to 75 psi then dropped it down toabout 37psi
The 'buckle' in the tyre is still there, although the rim can be observed to run true, certainly not showing any sign of causing the tyre to move.

I'd put a vid up but I've run out of time for a coupla days (goin' surf fishing. fuck the bike)

Any thoughts? Can't say I've seen a tyre do this.
