Due to work this year I will only be there on Friday and Saturday.

I've gone on both my Vulcan and my dual-sport and had a blast on both bikes. I would highly recommend camping as it will allow you to meet a lot of interesting people. Also, once you get in the area there are great free maps of the area available and you can plan your entire trip pretty easily by yourself. My first time was done with zero planning and the free map and I loved every minute of it.

The big issue you will find is the cost of food and drink as they charge a lot because of the rally. This is why I recommend the campground below, because they have a cafe that will stuff you for a reasonable price:

If you want to stay in town and it is too late to find a room, try looking for tent sites on people's lawns. The year I went I responded to an ad for a tent site on someone's lawn. They had rented their entire lawn out and it was a pretty nice group of people. I had access to a shower and bath. There was a picnic area for hanging around, drinking, and BBQs. They were also only a block or two away from the main strip. My trip was done last minute and I thought I would have to settle for a crappy spot, but this was a lot of fun and better than many of the big camp sites I visited while there.

Great info in here, I'll ask a question here instead of starting a new thread for now. I'll be heading up this year to work with a buddy of mine, we are going to drive up a week before though so we can get some riding in. Where would you guys recommend as a good route from sturgis to get some good street riding in? We'll be riding a Ducati Monster and a 1200R sporty street tracker so mileage may be a concern since we won't be able to go much further than a 100 miles on a tank. Riding west and camping a night or two aren't out of the question so the routes don't necessarily need to be day trips. Probably check out Rushmore and Devils Tower of course while we're there but if you guys had 3 days or so to just meander down some nice roads where would you spend it? Thanks for any advice!
