84 Yamaha Xt 600 oil Leak

I bought a 1984 Yamaha XT 600 a couple days ago as my first bike. I love it! Out riding I noticed it was leaking oil on the right side of the crank case. I found a gouge/tear in the gasket. If I'm not mistaken this is called a crank case gasket? Its the gasket furthest on the right of the crank case. Would replacing this gasket just mean, draining the oil, removing the kickstart leaver, and pulling the right hand crank case cover? Or am I going to have parts flying all over the place when I pull the cover? Thanks.

BTDT.

You have to mess with the kickstarter and maybe the decompression cable. Also the oil filter cover has to come off first. DON'T over torque the bolts, if you strip any of the threads up on the case it's a PITA to heilicoil them.

The old XT knows how to leak oil like an old HD. DAMHIK

You can run the bolts in and stop went no more shaft is showing. And turn it just a little more. And it will stopped. Thats it. Use a short racket to turn the bolt in. It takes practice to get it right. BIG ED XT&TT 600 Fan!!:fre aky
