Ghosts and Glass Buttes

Even though the Spring Break on the Crooked River was going on, http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=853361 and LittlePosum and I knew how much fun it would be, there are only so many totally perfect days to ride in the desert. This weekend happened to be 2 of them.

LittlePosum and I rode east of Bend to try and find the town of Stauffer http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/or/stauffer.html and explore around Glass Butte.

Headed down Ford Road

Back side of Pine Mountain

2 track perfect pumice to Frederick Butte RD

Crosssed Frederick Butte RD and took some 2 track out to Highway 20. Slabbed it about 9 miles to Hampton and the Hampton Station Cafe. It is located smack in the middle of Bend and Burns on Highway 20.

I am so happy this place is open Tuesdays through Saturdays again. It opens up a lot of terrain having a fuel stop!

Food was awesome BTW! No frozen burger patties in this place.

Strong Work !

Nice, man ! Nothing like some wide open spaces. Looks like a fantastic ride. What kind of temps were you two in ? Looks like a ride where you can just mosey along or hammer it. Kudos

I recall heading out in the glass butte area looking for a ghost town (can't remember the name, but don't think it was Stauffer). Love it out there!

Waiting for more picture, patiently.

Ghosts and Glass Buttes... Continued

Beautiful spring day that started with frost on roofs in town. Fueling up to get out of dodge the temps were already creeping up and I had to pull off a layer just a block from home.

Wide open desert views!

Mr. Dual Sport rolling back the throttle on the apocalypse bike!

On our way north I spooked up a herd of antelope. I scrambled to get a pic when they were close but those critters are quick!

Happy to have the folks working at Hampton Station!

He sure looks hungry...

The chow was awesome I had the special buffalo burger and a chocolate shake!

Good thing we got lunch and fuel there was a lot more riding ahead of us...

Wide open spaces rule! Was 70 or so on Saturday 30's at night and mid 60's on Sunday. Perfect.

Here you go!

We left Hampton and headed south

Horse Stud Butte

We found Stauffer. Not much there, at least we didn't find much. Just some fences without barbed wire, an old water hole, and some flattened houses.

After Stauffer, we headed to Glass Butte. The map doesn't show any roads leading up the south side but there has to be a way.
We ride up a 2 track adjacent to a draw and make it to here.

But we want to be by the towers in the distance!

After some creative navigating we make it!

Here's s'more ...

He forgot to mention that while we were hunting for the living dead we found life, the first spring desert wild flowers!

And saw a few more critters of the hooved persuasion (mule deer).

Went through a gate past a little cow pond reservoir and scared the crap out of a huge lone Canada Goose that was hiding behind a sage brush. Got to the end of that road and we could see the north side of Stud Horse Butte, we wanted to be on the south side... So we turned around and kept on adventuring!

Riding around up over and down that butte was super fun! We were down below a ridge on some nice pumi 2 track and stopped at and intersection with some really old fence posts... Mr. Dual Sport felt that we were close to the ghost town. You know he is all touchy feely with his super natural side.

There he is totally channeling voices of the old west sprits.

Oh yeah, we're not the ghost buster after all. So we decide to go to a higher place. Not really a road to get us up there and I had a scary moment and froze up a bit but we pressed on any way!

Pretty awesome view from here but the goal is the top of Glass Butte, the tower you can see in the background to the left of my bike.

So we must bush whack further! After a sip on the old flask only a small sip of course. We intercepted a road and after a steep climb with me dumping my bike once and needing help to get on it again... Success!

Great views!

Head back down the hill to find a camp spot with both sunset and sunrise views and I fall and flail around in the snow for a bit, and then we go back to the saddle of the butte to relax and enjoy the whiskey!

Yea that...

We head back through the snow that wasn't a problem the first time but now someone is getting exhausted!

I had to take some pics of coarse

Ok it's time to go help. But one more pic. What's that? You surely wouldn't throw that at the camera.

Yep it nailed me too!

Back to camp we go

Beautiful spot

More planned in the next couple weeks too!

What a view to wake up to!

We headed back down the north side of Glass Butte and headed up the GI Ranch.
LittlePosum has most of the pictures from this stretch.
Basically looped back around to Pine Mountain on dirt roads North of Highway 20.
Lunch by Klootchman Creek in the Maury Mountains.

And headed home via Pine Mountain and Ford Road!

Great ride! We both got to see some new areas on this one.
LittlePosum will finish this RR later!

The way back home...

Waking up to the dawn with such beautiful views made for a glorious Easter morning. We needed coffee! The wind was whipping at our camp on the butte so we pack up and roll down the hill to find a more protected spot. There is so much obsidian on the ground that the road glitters in the sun light.

We had to dodge cows left and right and then we found a cool old wind mill.

Perfect lunch and lounge stop!

There was even a butterfly to chase.

Almost home.

Great first overnight ride of the season! Can't wait till next week!
