Sub frame mods



G'Day Rade
When I bent the sub frame I added these extra plates would your tank have clearance to get past these plates? There 3mm plate

I had the same idea about doing something like this for the Super Enduro, but would have no idea how to go about executing it, any chance of doing this for the SE in the future?

I know the battery and the fuse blocks would reduce capacity but it might still have substantial capacity. I was thinking that you could have the filler come out the back of the tail section and relocate the tail light below it.

Just dreaming.

3D model is saying 8 liters, but reality will we less, because of the air pockets. Next week I wil test it in reality - it will be game to find the best "air ventilation" - or how to say - in order to maximize the capacity...

Uf, not an easy english for me :-)
If I got it correctly - there will be a clereance, but not sure if for your plates shape...

I do think of doing carbon-kevlar 3 layers skin to the bottom of the tank - to protect it from abrasion.

What next

I have the first to prototypes in my hands and I am again a bit smarter:-)

how it looks like:
- the mould/form seems to be good - however 3 small optimizations will be done
- tanks looks good - even when we cut it the walls are the same width - but we will make them a bit thinner (4mm)





what next:
  • check - it fits in the subframe for 990 and 950 (w/o ABS models only) - during weekend
  • finalize mounting
  • finalize air ventilation -> it will significantly influence the final capacity
  • finalize the heat isolation from the pipes

for discussion:
- the filles has currently G 1 zoll/inch coil - manufacturer question if this is the best solution from usability point of view, problem is just a limited space between the seat lock and the fairing...
- thinking of carbon-kevlar protection skin to avoid abrasion
- TUV certification - it will pass for sure (as other tanks from my manufacturer) but it is quite costly and it would mean price increase by aprox. 100USD...

Hi Rade, I can see a possible problem with fuel splash back triggering the pump nozzle with the location of the filler hole. I'm sure you testing will confirm if it is a problem though.

For me, I couldn't care about TUV certification, but you carbon-kevlar protection skin idea has merit.

I had the stainless steel piece first - very similar shape and it was not the case... As the filler hole is lower than the origo tanks filler, the venting has to be wired along the air box and end up next to the tripple clamps, than it works...

Question

If you kept the thicker walls would that not allow for the exclusion of the additional abrasion protection of the carbon fiber and it additional cost?

Could Al sheet on that side in its place be an easier and cheaper solution to the carbon fiber?

Just wondering.

very good questions!
- thicker walls means less capacity - 2mm less means half liter of capacity!
- I have to find how expencive would be the mould to shape the Al sheet - I am afraid of the fixed costs

Can they leave the mold thicker on the bottom and say, 1/4 of the way up the sides, then transition it to a thinner mold for the remainder of the sides and the top? That gives you the best of both worlds (thick bottom for abrasion resistance and thinner sides/top for additional capacity) without having to incorporate additional materials.

Why is abrasion resistance so important?

Is the tank interfering with the free movement of the wheel? or is it protection for stones flying from the wheel?
