Probably the Last Lookout for this season... Orleans Mountain CA

Saved one of the best for what might be the last high-elevation ride of the season. Orleans Mountain... the epicenter of BigFoot country.

This lookout construction is a bit unusual for NW California... it sits like a castle on a foundaton of hewn stones. A tremendous amount of labor went into this one.

A close look at the stonework... Concrete steps and pipe-railing leading up to the tower. This is miles and miles from nowhere.

Another USFS outhouse with a million dollar view. Mt. Shasta looms in the distance.

Smoke from some recent fires lingers over the mountains and valleys off to the SW... and the first clouds are moving in from an approaching weather system.

Bigfoot sighting. Gary said... "he was right over there just a moment ago", claimed his camera ran out of film just as he was about to snap the million dollar photo. Note the cables holding the tower on the mountain. I think it gets wild up here in the winter.

Bikes at the Lookout. The Dakar was a handful on the last mile up. Loose rocks, a steep pitch and Shinko 708. Even more of a handful on the way down... but both bike and body made it down without any broken bits. No photos of the rocky stuff, too busy riding. Next time I'll bring a smaller bike.

Trinity Alps with an early-season dusting of snow. More to come.

I want to come back up here and camp overnight next summer. Would be an awesome field of stars overhead... and nobody to bother you.

Between Millican and Christmas Valley

Abandoned station..

The rides...

And the view...

And a better view from a tower of a different color.... took the hard side of the hill up via old cow path, because the main road is closed off... Not a lookout tower, but a microwave tower.. But that should probably be a whole nother thread...

And why it's never a good idea to take the cow path up to a microwave tower.....
I've got one more hill to climb.

2 Lookouts for 2010...

Here's some 2010 lookouts from last weekend. Hayfork Bally and Plimmer Peak.

Hayfork Bally. (Bally is native indian name for high place).

This is a rock formation at HF Bally. Nice view though.

Hmmm.. where did we go ?

Holy shit.

Next stop was Hayfork (for gas)... then Plimmer Peak Lookout. Guy was nice, invited us up.

View from Plimmer Peak... Mt Shasta... (on a hazy summer day).

Yes, Shasta was there.

View looking down into Hayfork, pretty nice look at the place.

And the next (future) ride over to 'Bully Choop' Lookout. Big Peak on the left. (7100 ft) You can kind of see the lookout on top.

Back via Indian Valley. At that point I was literally hanging on the damn bike... retrospect, I shoulda taken a break in Hayfork, heart surgery is nasty stuff.

At any rate, a long hot haul back to Hyampom for dinner. The resturant/bar has re-opened on the South Fork Road, pretty good food but damn, I forgot to take pictures. Rejuvinated, headed home on Pelletrau ridge and FH1. 290 mile ride for the day...

Grizzly Peak near McCloud CA

This lookout is abandoned and is scheduled to be dismantled sometime soon. Hearst Corporation has the road gate locked from 89 but you can get there from NF11. The last part was a little hairy getting around the gate at the bottom of the lookout road but it is a great ride all in all.

Someone broke out all of the glass and stripped out the tower. (one of the reasons they are going to tear it down) It's such a cool place to go....

Spectacular views as usually found at lookouts...

Mt. Shasta to the north

Iron Canyon reservoir to the south

That Tree Top Firetower is great. Never seen anything like that.

But here's a few east coast towers for your viewing pleasure.

Secret firetower close to home:

Somewhere in South GA along 441, headed to Florida. (Just realized I somehow do not have pics of the actual tower )

Hey Flux.....Hope things are going well back in the big Ga. Sorry...that first tower there is no secret. Been there a few times but never on a bike. I won't tell where it's at though. One of our ham radio repeaters is located on that tower. As for the one in south Georgia, that one is definitely a secret. Can't say I remember passing that one while being back home. The picture through the glass is awesome. I'm hoping that now that I am out in northern California I can visit a few of these other towers that the others her have posted. Take care man....Go Dawgs.
Out of Texas gotta get out of California ASAP.
