Stainless commercial grade pot scrubbers are convenient because they are rolled up like a doughnut. Just slip the center hole over the core and stack them up.
Another more costly solution is Fiberfrax, which is wool made from a refractory mineral. It won't burn out or melt and should be packed as tightly as possible.
I used to use the stainless scrubby pads, supermarket grade. Copper in a pinch. Worked well, needed shaking the soot off every so often but lasted forever. Not the quietest.
