I agree. But they ran well at Sepang, and I'm sure Adrian Newey has clever cheats updates on the way. Remember how their form changed dramatically in the second half of last season? Newey's a genius, I've no doubt he'll find something.

I must admit that to my callow eye there's not a lot of difference between Sepang and Shanghai. I was surprised to see Red Bull so far off the pace in China. I'm sure updates to the other cars were a factor, but I assume the track contributed as well.

Kovalainen rejoins Caterham as reserve

Quote:
Heikki Kovalainen will take part in first practice for this weekend’s 2013 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix after rejoining Caterham to serve as one of two reserve drivers alongside Alexander Rossi.

Kovalainen, a former race winner with McLaren, competed for Caterham from 2010 to 2012, before he and team mate Vitaly Petrov were dropped in favour of Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde for the 2013 season.

The 31-year-old Finn will participate in FP1 at the next two Grands Prix as part of a formal technical development role he is taking up with Caterham, helping support the introduction of the team’s first performance updates to their 2013 car, the CT03.

“It’s obviously great news that I’ll be on track in Bahrain and Spain and I’m really looking forward to getting back to work and helping the team as much as I can,” said Kovalainen. “I’ll be taking part in the two FP1 sessions in Bahrain and Barcelona to give the team my input on the new parts we’re bringing to those races, and I’ll be working closely with the race drivers and the engineers on track and back at Leafield to help everyone get the most out of the new package.

“(Caterham Group Co-Chairman) Tony (Fernandes), (team principal) Cyril (Abiteboul ) and I have been talking about me taking up this role for quite a while, so it’s good to finally be able to announce how I’ll be helping the team in 2013. I’m physically ready to get back into the car and I know my experience can help give the team new ideas and options for directions to take on setup and strategy. I’m looking forward to getting back to work!”

Kovalainen’s appointment is part of a larger restructuring of Caterham’s driver line-up, with Rossi moving to Caterham Racing to compete in the 2013 GP2 Series in the car raced by Ma Qing Hua at the season-opening GP2 race in Malaysia.

Caterham say that Ma, who recently made history by becoming the first Chinese racing driver to take part in an F1 race weekend in China, remains a core member of their F1 driver roster and an announcement about his revised 2013 race plans will be made in due course.

“After Ma’s successful run in FP1 in China a number of new opportunities have arisen for him and we have decided to restructure our current line-up,” explained Abiteboul. “Alexander moves to Caterham Racing to compete in GP2 and I am sure he will be an immediate success in that championship whilst he will continue to enjoy the link with the F1 team throughout the season.

“Heikki returns to track work with us and we are delighted to welcome him back into the team. He has six years of F1 experience behind him so he is perfectly placed to provide us objective feedback on the various types of configurations we will run and to give us an objective view of the 2013 tyres against his experience with the 2012 compounds.

“Having invested in Heikki for our first three years of competition it would be a waste not to leverage the valuable expertise he brings. As F1 is a team sport, he will also provide support to Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde, who are both doing a good job in their first months with the team.”

Caterham lie 11th in the 2013 table, with their best result of the season to date Pic’s 14th place in Malaysia.

Yes I agree the best driver in the field won the WDC!

Not sure I got my tire questions answered, but hey we can't all agree (ie be right)...

What would be the fun in that!

I guess it depends if you are an Alonso fan or a Schumie fan

Quote:
Perhaps one of the most famous incidents which highlighted the dirty air conundrum was in Imola 2005. After emerging from his first pitstop of the race in 3rd, Michael Schumacher firstly overtook Jenson Button for 2nd, before overturning a 20 second gap in 13 laps to be right on Fernando Alonsos tale before the second round of pitstops. They emerged from their final stops in the same order, and for the next 12 laps Schumacher threw everything bar the kitchen sink at Alonso, eventually finishing two tenths behind at the finish.

defending your position

Quote:
Perhaps the best example of a stellar defensive performance in the past 15 or so years was Mika Hakkinen, in 1998 at the A1 Ring. Using car positioning and mastering braking points to hold off a lighter two stopping Michael Schumacher at the start of the Grand Prix, he exercised the perfect defensive style, and it created one of the highlights of the 1998 Formula 1 season.

I am a Shumi fan all the way! . Go Shumi!

However I am an even bigger racing fan. Shumi was the master but sometimes things don't always go your way! The reason these things are so special is that this did not happen often the master usually got around the slower car and the second rate driver...

Kidding, I gained a lot of respect for Alonso this past weekend when he brought his girlfriend's girlfriend to the race! In this case, and this case only... Go Alonso!

In the other clip Shumi may have learned something that he used later on... Or he was too busy laughing and thinking, I got karina, you can have this one Mika... Loser!

All joking aside DRS, KERS, shitty tires makes F1 feel a little WWF to me. It is more fun to watch a driver work for his position than know he can push a button and off he goes.

To me race wins ment more when they had to be earned. As a fan I remember hoping Shumi would get past the other driver, when he did not I was dissapointed and when he did it ment something.

is it time to put a fork in McLaren?

McLaren: Spain upgrade has to deliver after slow start to F1 season

McLaren admits that its Spanish Grand Prix update package "has to deliver" after Jenson Button had to use an alternative strategy to finish fifth in China last weekend.
Despite having made progress from its troubled start to the campaign, the Woking-based outfit is resigned to waiting until its revamped car arrives to see if it can rescue its title hopes.
And although Jenson Button led the race in China thanks to his two-stop strategy, team principal Martin Whitmarsh knows that doing that is not good enough.
"I would like to be leading it when the chequered flag comes out," he said, after seeing Button eventually come home in fifth place.
"I am not delighted. I cannot be delighted. To be honest, I am disappointed about it.
"An enormous amount of work went into some modifications which were a bit on the fly, a bit of a try here, and I think we made a bit of progress but not as much as I would like.
"So overall I am a bit disappointed but we now have to make sure that the big package coming for Spain delivers."
When asked by AUTOSPORT if it was essential McLaren's Spanish GP updates produced a big step forward if the team was to remain in the title hunt, Whitmarsh said: "It has to deliver something."
Button himself says there are tangible signs that McLaren is making progress, as he felt it vital the team did not let its motivation slip.

"We are still a long way behind the lead guys but there is progress, from the first race to now," he said.
"The first race was 1.5 seconds [off pole position], the last race was nine tenths and here we were seven tenths in Q2, so it is definitely improving.
"We were two tenths off a Red Bull in Q2, so there is definitely progress.
"It is tough being where we are, but we need to be positive that we are moving forward."
