If you bear left at the Y, you will come out on 87, maybe six or seven miles north of its junction with 385. Taking the right fork will bring you out at the south end of the Wildlife Loop. From which you can pick up French Creek Road to come out at Blue Bell after passing Horse Camp campground.

When I was there in August, a bunch of us crossed from Red Shirt east to BIA 27, the road that runs south from Scenic. This is true bushwhacking. Tracks exist intermittently, but they don't show on the Delorme. I bailed early because of an overloaded bike and a recently-dislocated shoulder. It was pretty wet in there, not usually the case. I look forward to completing that segment next year.

It also looks like you can go west from Red Shirt over to Fairburn, pretty much following French Creek.
I went west out of Scenic but couldn't get across the Cheyenne River. Ended up going south & coming out on 40 about 15 miles south of Scenic. I was hoping to find a way across toward Red Shirt, sounds like you did. I'd appreciate any tracks that are available through there.

I see the roads you're talking about from Red Shirt up through the Parks & into Custer, I'll have to check them out.

Thanks, appreciate the suggestions.

Great read

If you're looking for a riding partner look me up. I'm in Sioux Falls and looking for gravel road adventure.

Nice! Home sweet home. Miss it, well, miss about from about June to September when it looks like this.

Thanks for bumping this, I missed it back in 2011. Great ride, sleddog.

That looked like a fun ride. I've been wanting to see the grasslands.

What it's all about

HTML Code:
All I could think of was how many times I've heard people say or read how boring they thought going across South Dakota is! Here I am, just a few miles North of I-90 & I'm ecstatic with the views & history I'm just happening upon!
Hey Sleddog -

Found this report by way of another report, thanks for keeping the link posted!
Great report and pics. I haven't been on any longer rides yet, but it's so true what you said - if my kids tell me an area is boring, it goes on my mental list to come back on my bike to check out. I just know there will be something there to come across that's interesting.

Peace,
Larry H.

Great ride report, love the pictures. I'm heading out that way in June and would love to travel across the state on that route. From your pics it seems more than doable on a GSA, correct me if I'm wrong of course. I see you were on a Klr.

No problem!

There are some sections that could be difficult if its wet, and there is always the chance of hitting a soft spot (this crash actually totalled this GS!).

I guess I should subscribe to my own threads...........

Laconic,

Now you need to come out & ride them!

Dusty1013,

The ride is definitely doable on big bikes however, like Rokklym noted, it can be a handful when wet. A lot of the roads don't have any gravel on them & when they get wet it turns into snot. The good news is it'll dry out pretty quick too.

Bob,

I did get your PM

KLRmonkey,

Thanks for looking! I've found so much cool stuff by taking a wrong turn!

yourdrunkdad,

Drop me a PM & I'll get them to asap. Anyone else too.

Thanks Chad for handing out the advise. Let me know when you're coming this way & may be we can hook up!

Spring & Riding season is coming

I gotta do this... add this in with the black hills loop and you would have a nice week long trip taking your time.

Troublesome since time travel has yet to be perfected.
You should do it.....& mark your calendar so you can go back & tell Prop you found something to put on your calendar!

Cheers

I would like to get the tracks for this if possible Sleddog. The CRF isn't ready for a ride that big yet, but it will be soon.
