Jasper to Dawson Creek, Forestry Road 734

Looking at the maps I see Forestry Trunk Road 734 that runs parallel to the Smoky River from near Grande Cache to near Grande Prairie. Any one with experience on that road and would it be a worthwhile alternative to 40? I'll be camping near Jasper and riding to Dawson Creek to pick up the Alaska Highway (on the way to D2D.)

Also, for those familiar with Dawson Creek, are there any cheap motels there? I don't require much but will be coming off several days of camping and looking at several more.

That road can be quite an adventure depending on weather and rig/forestry
traffic. The gravel can be super deep and loose or non existant in places.

The ftr also joins hwy 43 at Crooked creek or you can cut across to 40
on the Canfor road south of GP. Just remember that there are no services
between Grande Cache and Grande Prairie. No houses either.

The FTR is remote and can be seldom travelled. Just a heads up.

Enjoy, it's beautiful country.

Thanks, that is what I needed to know. Since I'll be traveling alone (well, with my SPOT), I think I'll skip it. If I were taking the KLR, I might do it anyway but the Wee is a bit much in deep gravel.

I've been from Jasper to Dawnson Creek a couple times before but always cut over to Prince George and up via Chetwynd; thought I'd try a different route this time.

If you've never done hwy 40 before, I'd go that way.

It's not particularly scenic in my opinion anyways, the trunk road south of Hinton is much better, I'd take 40 from Hinton north too.

Absolutely! Too much oilfield truck traffic too. 40 is more purty.
