What is important for an airhead ?
- Proper API rating to have the correct additives in it SG is good. BMW advise against the "modern" ratings.
- Proper viscosity to get easy lube on cold starting and good pressure in hot summer on the highway. 20w50 is supposed to cover a very wide range of temps. Bear in mind that when you queue at a town entry after a speed run in the highway above 30 ° Celsius, you have to pray that your oil is still oil and not as fluid as water... If you plan to use the bike below -10 ° Celsius, you may have to change for a less heavy oil... But you may also change pilot often .... Or heat it up
- Proper type of oil. These engines where designed for mineral oils. Do refrain from fully synthetic...
And you know what ? The oils meting all the above are amongst the cheapest ! Cool ! You will have money for a new filter and set of gaskets...

The Castrol oil we get here in Canada is labeled "Castrol GTX Gran Prix 4 Stroke Motorcycle Oil". I believe that in the states it is just Castrol Grand Prix Motorcycle oil. It is available at our WalMarts, Canadian Tire, Lordco autoparts, and numerous other places you would normally buy oil. Just not usually available at dealerships.
