Budget info

John

For your readers, wondering about budgets....I figure my five month trip, Eastern Canada to Buenos Aires cost in the $12,000-$13,000 range. That includes a flight, Panama to Bogata for me and my KLR and then a flight BA to Miami for me and the bike to get back to NA. I really lucked in at the end and a friend brought my bike back from the Tampa, Florida area to St. Andrews, New Brunswick in his trailer for $200.. My flight from Tampa to Canada on my return leg is also included in this total.

By far, the most expensive part for me was the Flights and ride south through the USA. It was October and too cold for an old guy like me to camp until I hit the Blue Ridge Parkway and motels in the north are expensive! Once I crossed into Mexico, costs dropped considerably.

I didn't skimp on things but I didn't really buy anything or spend much on anything but day to day needs. I stayed in hostels and modest hotels for the most part and never camped in Latin or SA, I took private rooms over dorms when available. I likely spent more on beer than food. I liked the beer, the food, not so much.

Glad you, Brice and RTW Paul are all back in NA safe and sound.

Hola Kari y Rose,

Nice pics!!! Colombian backroads are epic. I'm counting on you guys to keep up the
Sherpa Colombian Auxiliary Research Expedition (S.C.A.R.E.) and continue reporting back what you find in my absence. Use this thread if you don't feel like starting your own. It's a fitting ride report for all members of the South American Sherpa Scouting Yahoos (S.A.S.S.Y.). I want pictures or you weren't there!

Carry on amigos,
Juan Sherpa

Great stuff you guys!!

Who says you can't have a tag team Sherpa South America and back minimalist ride report?

I really appreciate you guys continuing to report back in my absence. Just seeing the pics of the roads out by Guatape brings back such good memories. Pictures of Sherpas sliding down muddy back roads warms my heart.

I look forward to getting back to Colombia next fall. In the meantime, keep up the good work amigos!!!

Kindest regards,
John Zona Downs

Hi TrashCan,

Good point. Would hate to see my ADV buds suffer from withdrawal. Who cares who's riding 250 Super Sherpas in South America? Great pics and stories is what it's all about on ADVrider.

I'm still there in spirit.

Saludos,
Juan Sherpa

Best to buy the return ticket to Colombia right now Sure makes it easier to head back down South when you already have your ticket to fly with the date set imho.

Cheaper too

Hi TM,

My sister is my travel agent and she scans the fares. It turns out that the cheap fare to Medellin Colombia right now is Spirit Air. The fares are higher 6 months out and drop on the flights that aren't full nearer your departure date. I could fly from Mesa Arizona to Medellin for 144.00 in three days if I had any money.

I'm PM you in a couple weeks when I'm passing through Oklahoma to see if you're around.

Best,
The other John

Is this just Spirit Airlines? I found in the past that buying earlier on the bigger carriers, Avianca, AA, Delta, United , and the like can save a lot.

Spirit is to Colombia like Southwest is to the US it seems.

SLAP is coming up and New Zealand Joe is coming back for his DR on May 15. Spring is here and so is a lot of the good riding.

Sherpa dreams

John, I didn't make it as far as SA, I got started to late at the end of November, and only had a week to plan it, I was able to catch a truck ride to AZ from WA state, Then rode from Parker AZ down the Baja then ferried over from La Paz. Here's a pic of mine at Lake Atitlan, I used Givi luggage a friend gave me and my topbox is a 10$ walmart special, water bottles onto the rear pegs using bicycle bottle holders. I need to get a bigger tank so I can ditch the spare I have to carry. This October I'll try again, Never thought I'd say this, but can't wait till summer is over to start again!

hi CaptUglyDan,

Nice looking Sherpa travel bike. Look for a Clarke 4 gallon gas tank for a Honda XR650. It fits the Sherpa with minor modification and you can ditch the spare gas can. Hope to see you down the road.

Cheers,
John Casa Grande

Juan Sherpa, greetings from a fellow Nebraskan. You are a good storyteller and you have had a grand story to tell. I started this tale while I was laid up and have enjoyed it the whole way through. Looking forward to the next part of the journey.

As fifthcircle told you much earlier, Bassett Ne is not that far from Bloomfield Ne and you would be welcomed at his soirée, fifth fest at Labor Day.
