I'll post up info about trails and roads in central Colorado, just like I did last year. I'll update post #1 as info becomes available.

First things first - check out several Rainbow Trail access points.

East side of Highway 285.

RBT above Silver Cr Little Bridge

RBT

Marshall Pass Rd

Poncha Cr Rd

Silver Cr Rd

Looks like it'll be a while before we can start clearing downfall.

Nice, make sure you put Otto Mears on the list for me. Gonna do the Medano/Otto ride around the 11 of May.

Thanks, Dan

I love it when you begin this thread every year Rick because I know we are just two - three weeks behind you. I can tell you that last weekend the stock driveway was not at all passable

Dan, May 11th maybe a little early for Otto Mears. Last year it was cleared on/about May 26th and we have a larger snow base this year. We will see how the melt goes and how much shoveling the "team" does this year. We try to get it open early because it is one of the main routes for a lot of other trails.

First down tree to be cleared on the RBT - I didn't even need to use a saw:

Yes, we clear all the downfall according to USFS standards - no hop-overs left behind!

Rode today down in this country. Thought I would go out an poke my nose up a few trail heads and wooo hoooo got to ride some actual trail. Will be riding in Montrose next weekend but will start clearing for sure the weekend after.

PS Ramz - Ranger Trail switchbacks are open - not all the way to the 4-way though.

Rode several miles of Rainbow today from 108 towards Bear Creek. Moved a couple downed trees. Everything is 95% dry with some very small snowy patches here and there. One more warm day and everything ought to be dry.
The trail towards 285 looked an awful lot darker and wetter still.

RBT snow removal:

There wasn't much snow to dig out, but the down trees were well represented.

It was really nice out there today.
Feedback on the work was immediate - someone had a nice ride this afternoon on his Katoom 200...

Sunday ride on the Rainbow:

Oops - snow blocked 5.6 miles east of Big Cottonwood TH, about 1 mile short of Rainbow Trail Camp.

More snow blocked; 1.9 miles west of Cottonwood Cr TH, up Wolf Cr at the slab.

After scouting on foot, we found the snow was over 3 feet deep at both locations, so we elected NOT to use the snow shovels and just turn around.
And ride the absolutely great trail back the way we came...
I've never seen the trail in such great shape in this area! Someone's been busy maintaining; USFS? SCC? BSA? VOC?
Whoever it was, THANKS.

Aspen Ridge is open and passable but pretty muddy in sections--I rode through yesterday afternoon. I would avoid it until it dries out some more to avoid tearing it up unnecessarily.

The roads through Herring Park were clear and mostly dry but are basically all dried-mud ruts; no fun at all.

so dont know anything about sargents other than people recommend it as an alternative to taylor park.

when does it usually become rideable, are some of the trails listed in your 1st post in that riding area?
thanks

Sargents is often open at about the same time as Taylor. I would wait for Rainbow Trail to be 100% open before getting excited about Sargents riding.

None of the trails described in the first post relate to Sargents. And yes... Sargents is a great alternative to Taylor.
