delaminated breaks yamaha dt175cc enduro

how does one tell if the brakes have become delaminated?
i saw somewhere that this is a serious safety issue!

I believe that would be the lining coming loose from the brake shoes. Only ever saw this once , on a '66 Comet I had.

Take the wheel off and look. Either the lining will be attached or it won't. If they aren't adjusted to the limit but aren't working it is more likely the shoes are glazed into rock or the wheel is grooved beyond hope or both.

Shoes used to be dirt cheap for those. I used to replace the shoes in my XT200 a lot because of the abuse it saw. Water, mud and hard braking tended to glaze the shoes quickly and they can only take so much sanding.

Grooves don't affect braking. You've still got the same surface area or more actually.

HUH!!!!
I put new shoes on a durango, and next thing you know CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK!!!!!WTF!!!!
pulled the drum off and the pad ripped right off the shoe there was very little adhesive used which kinda suprised me because the old shoes not only used adhesive but were also riveted together. Anyways oranged to apples needless to say the durango could still stop because 70% of the braking comes from the front discs. If a motorcycle liner fails and thats all you have is drum I can see that being a grave problem. If it worries you Inspect Inspect, safety first!!

ya, i'll be taking a look before i take it faster than 15km/hr thats for sure!

If a brake shoe does delaminate from age it can easily lodge between shoes and drum and launch who ever is sitting on the bike way over the bars with no prior notice.
Brake shoes are cheap.

With that DT175 while you are checking brake shoes look at the front brake cable. In my experience if your brakes fail on that bike it will be from a snapped cable. I ate the chain link fence in front of my parents house on my XT200 from that. On ancient bikes like that DT look for rust or unraveling at the ends. Cables are also cheap. If the cable looks at all suspect just replace it.
