2013 with great basin

welp, yet again another 2013 "it's different enough to annoy"

since BMW was gracious enough to give us the bike with the Vario mounts only, I am now left with either looking for the 2012 grab rails, or just taking the top mount off and going without in order for the GL Great Basin to fit right.

The stock pre 2013 grab rails show up on ebay about once a every week or two at fairly cheap prices.

I'd suggest going straight to your local dealer's service dept and asking if they have any kicking around from 12's that people had no use for. I was lucky enough to steal my girlfriend's old rail (she'd upgraded to Vario on her 12) when I needed to mount my GL Siskiyou setup on my 13.

I did send a mail to the Ride West guys, we'll see if they have anything kicking around. Local dealer is too new and more quad oriented, they probably would charge full retail as well.

Update:

I procured a grab rail from a Pre-2013 bike and it's WAY different. Lower profile, narrower and thinner bars.

This is really the only way it will work.

That is annoying

Good to know, thanks for the heads up. I assume the rail sides kick up so much that the GL just hangs on the high points ?

Check with your dealer. Most times they don't give the old ones back to the owner when installing luggage. I had to ask for mine, and they had several laying around.

Correct, and it's a bit wider as well.

Just in case anyone was wondering the GL Great Basin does work fine with the SW-Motech handles for their removable side racks.
