.... I'll probably continue to use drinking straws and oil my chain with the motor running but will recommend that most people refrain from both.

That's Darwinism to it best. I didn't say clean, I said lube, as in with a can of spray lube with a straw on the nozzle. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.

Way better-looking! But I dunno ... to blend in with the asphalt to that extent seems kinda risky.

Still ... I love the look!

I wish I could help you but I'm not sure what causes that problem.

So here is MY question to add... Leaving in just about a week for the big trip, what's a list of things I ABSOLUTELY NEED to check on both bikes before leaving? I've done the basics like oil changes, check the chain, install farkles..

And another.. does anybody live in the northern states (North Dakota, Minnesota, so on..) that would like us to stop by for a little meet and greet, maybe even a ride?
1. Cables. Make sure there are no frayed cores and that they are well lubricated. If you can, carry a spare of each.
2. Check brake pad thicknesses - easy with a flashlight.
3. Check coolant levels in the rad and puke bottle.
4. Check fuses and have spares - install with dialectric grease.
5. Take spare light bulbs.
6. What sort of battery is in the bike? If a wet cell, make sure the water levels is up and the terminal are tight.
7. Check the brake fluid levels. If not changed in the last 2 years, change them.
8. Go over each and every bolt on the bike. Loctite any you find loose.
9. Can you repair a flat on the road and do you have the tools to do that?
10. Chain lube ofr on the road?
11. Make sure you have fun!

Adding to previous recommendations above:

For Generation 1 KLR650's, if you plan on any night riding at all, I strongly, STRONGLY recommend you consider the IPF "FAT BOY" H4 headlight bulb:

http://www.tpimotorcycleparts.com/on...category_id=45

You can use this bulb as a direct replacement alone, or enhance its outstanding perfomance by adding a relay harness. A tremendous improvement over OEM lighting, with consequent safety aspects for both low and high beams.

I'd suggest you install this bulb, and carry the OEM for a spare--or, if you can afford it, carry another FAT BOY.

If any water crossings deeper than 10" appear likely, the "Tee mod" is essential.

Handguards may protect your control levers; spare levers on-board not a bad idea.

Wishing you a safe and enjoyable ride!

Hey folks.

I recently moved up to KLR - I traded a buddy an 09 sherpa for an 08 KLR.

Anyway, I had the tank off today, and noticed this tube coming out of the head. the hose on the end had burned off, and there was a bunch of soot on the end of the pipe. What is it, and where is the hose supposed to go??

That is the Air Induction System. You either need to hook it back up or remove it and block off the port and the vacuum port on the carb.

Thanks, I have been debating it and have only removed the stickers on the panels under the seat. That looks really mean. Now just get off my lazy ass!!

It provides a source of fresh air into the exhaust system to help finish the combustion process. In short, it's pollution/emissions gear. The other end of the hose should have been connected to the filtered side of the air box or the carby somewhere. If you decide to remove it make sure to block off both ends, one at the head the other at the air source, or it will run like crap.
