Adding a Clarke Tank from a XR650L

Since I own a XR650L, I've noticed that there are several parts that are interchangeable or there are a few parts that are different but overall it's the same thing.

The Clarke tank for the XR650L/XR600 can be mounted to the XR250R but you need different brackets and a petcock for a XR650L/XR600. Same is true for the Acerbis tank.

Here is my install.

Custom fabbed brackets, uses the OEM rubber grommet and collar.





From the custom bracket I made, the measurements are:

1) 7.5 cm
2) 9.5 cm
3) 4.0 cm



I mounted a large piece of clear plastic on the tank and then marked off where I needed the hole that mounts to the frame. I didn't account for the thickness of the bracket, so my measurements are off just a little but with some wiggling and pressure, I was able to get it to bolt on.



Uses the same seat hook off the 250. I added a small washer under the collar to make it a little easier to get the seat hooked.



Here is a side view after it was mounted with the petcock. I added a fuel filter just to be safe.



FYI - Later I noticed I installed the filter backwards and have corrected it.



And there you have it. You can buy a used XR650L/XR600 Clarke tank, fab some mounts, obtain a XR650L/XR600 petcock and away you go.

As a side note, I was a little bummed when I received the used tank. The PO painted the underside of the tank which I couldn't see in the pics. Oh well, small thing but still works.

All I need to do now is field test it.

Puke Clarke Tank

I added a filter to my xr250L and am glad I did. I cleaned my carb and reinstalled it and it blocked once again. I removed it and cleaned it again to fined very fine grains of sand in the carb bowl. So cleaned the tank a second time and added a filter. that solved the problem. I was surprised to see that what appeared to be a grain of sand had plugged the carb. It was very small. I recommend anyone to install a fuel filter after seeing how fine the particles were that blocked the carb.
I think I will now also look for a nice used after market tank for my bike to increase range on it for touring. I did pick up a nice atv tank bag for 17 bucks on amazon that works great. Just add a magnet to each side to hold it down from flapping at high speed.
I tried a brand new carb for a xr250r on mine too but it made it too hard to start so went back to the pumper stock carb.

I'd be more worried about where the sand came from, then keeping a filter on. The filter is a good idea for the time being, but def find the source. Cracked manifold, dirty air filter, dirty tank, etc.... I wouldn't just settle with the filter.

Do any of you boys find that after you've been riding for about 2 hours that hot starting the bike is a challenge? When it's cold, I can kick it once or twice and it starts up. After I've been riding for a while, it's usually one kick and easy turnover. After about 2 hours, I find I'm kicking it several times to get it to start.

Anyone else experience this or have any ideas?

BTW, nice catch from a friend. Somehow I put the filter on backwards!!!

New Here, Thought I would post some pics of my old 1993 XR250R, I just got it registered on Wednesday & took it out for its first ride on the road after slowly fixing it up for the last couple of years, I plan on doing a few more upgrades, It is a nice bike to ride though as is & I am quite impressed with how well it gets along for a little 250

I needed to fit some tires that were good enough to pass a registration inspection & I was given the rear battlax tire which has lots of tread left so I will run that until I want to fit a better road/trail rear tire, Maybe a D605 or a D606?
I Bought the Dunlop D605F front tire for a good price,

The XR will be used for quite a bit of on road commuting for a while so it is OK for now

The tires that were on it when I got the bike were way beyond safe for any road use, This bike was far from clean looking but was mainly missing parts which made it look terrible, Much better now (as you can see in my post above) after hunting up all the parts it needed>

Took the swing arm off to grease it and it needs swing arm bearings.

Any advice on how to remove them without damaging the swing arm?

Removed the shock arm bearing with sockets, washers and the suspension bolts. Will post pics soon.

I fitted an XR400R shock on my 1991 XR250R, had to do some grinding to get clearance for the upper shock mount on the frame (a wee bit narrow for the 400 shock) and had to install a Devol lowering link (or any brand lowering link) as the 400 shock was too tall. But it was a worthy mod. Maybe you could try it.
