Repair or replace our Garmin 2720

I'm trying to decide whether to repair our Garmin 2720 (actually it would be an exchange for a Garmin factory refurb) or replace it with a newer model.

It works great except for the touchscreen. Our daughter was borrowing it and either she or one of her friends threw the GPS under the seat without the protective cover on the screen. Poked a hole in the touchscreen, but the LCD is still perfect. You can actually use the GPS except that entering data on the QWERTY virtual keyboard takes about 4 or 5 tries due to a large dead spot on the touchscreen. Annoying as all get out.

Everything I read says new GPS's are all dumbed down, which leads me to believe that I won't like the new units over this old 2720. And we have the lifetime maps on this 2720 which will transfer to the refurb 2720, but not to a new GPS.

Are there new GPS's that compare to the old 2720s I should check out?

Or should we just go for the refurbed 2720?

Anyone got a dead 2720/2730/2820 with a good screen I can steal? Maybe I should try and replace the screen myself. I just haven't found a place where I can buy just the LCD/touchscreen.

I sent my 2820 in for refurb, it would not turn on at all, they sent me a Zumo 660 as the refurb for $179, as the 2820 is discontinued and they do not have any to ship as replacements, I would imagine it would be the same deal for the 2720.

If you run out of options, I'm getting ready to list my 2720 on eBay and get a hand-held unit.

I was recently informed by Garmin CS that 2610 and 2720 units can be rebuilt by Garmin. They do a unit exchange @ $99.

Google Garmin site for repair info..

Yeah, I already knew that the 2720 was still being refurbished by Garmin. And as of last night I have an e mail into their customer service asking for an RMA and instructions on how to pay.

The purpose of my question was to see what GPSs people have moved to from their 2720 and were happy with. No, not just happy with, but liked better than their 2720.

But no one really answered my question about what they liked as an alternative to the 2720, and I like our 2720, so I guess it's gonna be swapped for a refurb.

I don't know that there is a good alternative. The Zumo was pretty good (gone). Garmin seems to have moved most of their automotive devices into "giant smartphone" land...which begs the question why do that instead of just using googlemaps with an otterbox.

My 2720 is giving me issues right now. I called Garmin and they told me they don refurb those units anymore. I like the Streetpilot units. Im not liking the Oregon or Montana ones. I don't know what other alternatives are out there.
