Hi to Germany,

although we left Germany to life our dream and go around the world since Jan 2011, we're still Germans and will return from the trip part 1 in a couple of months :)

We lived in the Black Forest and would like to return to this area - it's just bikers paradise. But we need to find new jobs and return to a normal life - for a couple of years

I'm about 1/2 hour away and would be up for any dirt riding, but as you've already learned it's not that easy in Germany. Generally, everything which is not specifically forbidden is allowed. Unfortunately, driving motorized vehicles on roads without asphalt through forrests is explicitly forbidden. Most other dirt roads are private with signs as shown above.
The situation might be a bit better in the Netherlands or in Belgium, but I haven't tried that yet. I've read somewhere that it's legal to ride Dutch beaches in winter and the whole Dutch coast is within your 3-hour-range.
Then there are some motocross parcours in the area. The most interesting offroad parcours is off limit for bikes though, but you could rent a Russian tank and have some fun with that instead ...
For a quick onroad afternoon trip I'd recommend the Baumberge, the Sauerland, the Bergisches Land or the Teutoburger Land - not necessarily in that order. Be aware that a few roads in the Sauerland and Bergisches Land may meanwhile be closed for motorbikes on weekends and public holidays. They had too many accidents and are enforcing speed limits and road closures. Even a few unmarked police bikes are loitering there.

Pip

Oh, by the way, as this is my first post in this thread ... hello everybody!
Cheers Pip! Better late than never myself..

With some german spring on it's way it's time to break the bike out for some exploration. Looking at a topographical map, head east for hills. Some weekend touring through sauerland, and those other lands is on the menu. Maybe a single cylinder dual sport was not the best choice in motorcycle for an anti-offroad nation. (government)

To another point which has been touched on, coming from canada I reaaaaalllly see the congestion in germany. There seems to be people, and road congestion no matter where you go. Around every bend is another little village.. it never ends! That being said, many truly excellent roads to explore.

I'm pretty sure there are plenty roads where the Freewind 650 is a better choice than a ninja ...

Hey, if you bored, there's a medieval market complete with knight tournaments etc. on May 1-5 in Bad Bendheim.
http://www.horse-shows.de (sorry, German only)
I may be there on Friday evening.

New inmate

Another new inmate living in Germany (in Darmstadt, to be more precise). I just started my own day-tripping thread:
http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=884916

Are there any other ADVers from the Rhein/Main area here?

Moving to Stuttgart

Hi, I am moving from Colorado Springs to Stuttgart very soon. I have recently switched from an XR650R TO A KTM 990 ADV. I look forward to meeting some inmates and exploring the German countryside so hit me up if you have a ride in mind. My bike will be in transport from 20 MAY until ? But as soon as I find a rental home and get it delivered I will be ready to start exploring before the snow comes.

Welcome!! I've been in Stuttgart (near the airport) 4.5 years so can help you with local info. I know of a guy moving out of a rental in June so PM me if interested - it's virtually brand new and in the Degerloch area (I think).
