Awesome Squily, thanks for the write up!

Getting itching feet here. Getting pretty close to finishing this next phase of mods & do a few short trips before Bills memorial run to Big Red.

Damn, that was a decent hole in the Varadero case!

Cheers,

Dan.

I got my pipe ceramic coated. it hides the welds where the pipe steps up in size and on the bends.
surposed to half the radiating heat

... the XR is the greatest off road motorcycle ever constructed. There's nothing it can't do, hasn't won or will not outperform.

Roger that Digga,

That's not a bad idea. Any idea what it cost to get the coating?

Cheers,

Dan.

mine was about $150 or something, for all the pieces including the exhaust flanges.

looks more polished in real life

G'day Greg,

Sorry for the late reply, been away at Bills Farewell.
The performance was a bit disappointing - the first run indicated a 5hp power loss . However, the bike was running a bit rich. We cleaned up the rear cylinder fuel curve. The power picked up marginally (maybe 1hp), but needed a #122 Main jet for the front carb. It arrived (ex-Japan) before the trip. I've fitted it before the trip, but never got time to re-dyno to confirm results.
I also fitted the TA650 carb's from Liz's bike. They're a little different in some of the breathers & plumbing. Still need to correct / sort that out.
The bike isn't as crisp off idle either, which is a bit annoying.

Having said all that - the engine now has approx. 80K kms on it. I did a compression test before the trip (Spec: 164 - 224 psi). The front is 160psi, and the rear is 164psi. So the engine is getting a little tired, and has done quite a few more kms since the previous dyno test (almost 48hp on the wheel).

So what does this all mean? After talking to DrJoe, we're thinking it is possible that the split back to 2 pipes is messing around with the exhaust pressure wave. Another consideration is that none of the boys racing Hawks in the US have fitted twin pipes for performance. They stick with 2 - 1 systems. Also noticed that Hordpower don't sell aftermarket (ie, Arrow) headers. Makes you wonder, eh??

So, either way - the pipes are on for now. The engine will be due for a freshen up next year. I've sourced 2 x spare heads from the UK. They came with cams (although 1 x cam has a bit of pitting on the exhaust lobe). The next question what to scope? 663cc kit? 153 cams? 28mm inlet valves & matched ports? Polish the inner radii? Then there is the option of JE pistons which I know little about - or oversize Honda pistons?
I'll talk to you and Squilly about that when the time is closer.

Maybe after the engine is done, I'll get Dennis to make up a single pipe - and fit another Remus or FMF type pipe. Something with just a bit of restriction - to help out the bottom end.

Cheers,

Dan.

Very nice Dan

Just a thought, if your two headers run into one and then into two again, try capping one muffler and taking it for a spin.
