Ah, crap, I went up to Lake Shasta in November and got a RDL. Worst thing I ever sat on.
It was impossible for me to put my feet down, and I couldn't move on the bike. I was sitting in a large, deep hole.
It had high wings on the side that were terrible.
And they had no other form for it.
I sold it the minute I got back to town.
I need to find one very like the original (2008 R1200RT) only just a little wider in the tail area, but with the same type of turndown at the edges, so I can shift sides, and put my feet down.
I'm 6'2" so it was not that I'm too short. It's just a certain type of seat for someone that wants that type.

I was lucky enough that my bike came with a Bill Mayer Saddle, I just had to go to their shop up in Ojai to get it shaped to my specs and I am loving it, well worth it ! ! Much nicer than the stock seat ...

Check out Kontour seats, to me they are very well made and they stand behind their work. http://kontourseat.com/

Purchased a Saddlemen seat for my 800gs, very happy, have now purchased Saddlemen seats for my 2013 GSA, great seats and I think good value even with the shipping to Australia. Look great as well!

Rich's Seats

Got gel, got heat if you want it. Wide range of leather and fabrics... not one style fits all. Custom-built to your butt. He works with you until you're smiling. Great guy. Summer picnics and camping...ride in!!

I bought a Russell Day Long last year after reading all the great posts about it here. I've sent it back once and should send it back again. I really expected it to be great but, unfortunately it's not.

Where in NoDak do you live? My last active duty assignment was in Grand Forks, 1992-1995. I don't miss the mosquitoes!
I live in Wahpeton (lived in Fargo for a few years too). I really love my fz6, but if I could afford another bike it would be a GS that I can do a little off-road stuff.

You can have my RDL when you pry it out from under my cold dead ass!
Ok, maybe that's a little dramatic. Best thing about it is I don't think about it. Every once in a while it hits me that I'm not in pain any more.

Thanks for all the input. I know everyone's butt is a little different but it is nice to get feedback before dropping a bundle on a seat. There is always something new out there and I hate to get a product only to find out a month latter that something better was available. I think I'm going to get the saddlemen adventure seat. I'll let you guys know how it works for me..

Thumb Sargent Seats

I have Sargent seats (standard) on my GS and GSA. I'll sell you my Russell.
I put around 15,000 miles on it and switched to Sargent.

My take- If you like logging long hours in the saddle and don't need to get your ass off to the side for "spirited" riding, the Russell gives you the Goldwing touch.
I put off getting the Sargent because it just couldn't be comfortable, in my mind, because the shape doesn't look as comfortable as the Russell. 500 miles days are nothing on the Sargent or the Russell but I can "move" around on the Sargent and the Russell kind of locks you in one position. YMMV

Just got my Sargent in the low model. Love it. I'll let you know in a month, but initial impressions are very good.

Saddleman seat was weird and too tall. Corbin built like crap.

The Russell's look like a seniors models. Probably comfortable...but ugly.

RDL works for me....

I love the comments about RDL seats being ugly....really? Call my seat ugly, but I'm not going to bitch about how my ass hurts at the end of a long riding day....

I just sold my heated Russell seats to a nice man in Canada, who presumably will use them tor "logging long hours". I sold them for the reasons you just stated. They were awesome for a 9 day, 5,000 mile round trip to TX last year, and several other 8-10 hour days in the saddle.

But I slapped a stock seat on it for an off road trip a few weeks ago and was reminded how much I can enjoy a sporty ride on this bike. Russell is definitely comfortable, but it tames the "sport" right out of the bike because of the change in position.

I've had stock GS, GSA, Sargent, and Russell. Think I'll try my hand at modifying my own now.
