660 RFR for Rally Mongolia

After evaluating shiping a bike from Sweden or renting a bike in Mongolia we ended up purchasing a old 660 Rally from 2002 in Ulaanbaatar.

It will be used by my brother during Rally Mongolia in August.

It's been quite some work to get it back in race condition and I will post a few more photos and what's been done.


This picture is from day of purchasing -20 celsius, but I took a short test run to see if clutch and gears worked and the engine started without problem.

For sure both brothers like to beat each other once we are racing and to avoid complaints from my brother about machine failure I started by deassembly the bike totally

Next step ordering some parts including all chassie bearings and seals



Also a new upgraded shock

Frame there in good condition only a small crack on the plate undere the engine.

Frame welded, painted and ready for assembly

Well the deal is that the brother who winns over the other in the rally will be the final owner and I can still change my mind and let him ride my berg instead.

Well logistics is a challenge most of parts have I purshased in Sweden and loaded the suitcase with. Last trip I did have 37 kg of parts with me including new cylinder, piston, shock etc. Have not order anything with direct shipment to UB, if so I would use DHL/UPS as normal post service is a little unreliable. But you can also fins a lot of wear items in the country like chain,brakepads,tires etc. It's a unofficial KTM dealer available in UB who sells new bikes and some spares.

Finally I also found good oil in UB MOTUL syntetic 15/60 I have 2 cases at home will make it for the next few months for both bikes.

Thats good news for travelers, is the "KTM dealer" well known?

I don't belive they are well known by adventure people for sure most dirtbike riders know the company and their location. It's a bit tricky to find as they are located in the ger district north of UB. They don't speak any english but for sure you can explain most by body language.

I would not leave my bike for service as they have a different mentality for quality but for emergency repair and assistance from your self I belive most repair can be done in the workshop.

It's a few other places as well one selling privatly imported bikes and parts
