Formula E

Any bets on how well this will go over with racing fans?

IIRC from what I read in SI, the events will be one day each; practice in the morning, race in the afernoon. Cars can only go about 25 minutes on a charge, so they'll actually switch cars during the race.

Thanks for the info. Two thoughts occur to me. Who is paying for this, and who will pay to see it?

It looks like this is a project by Spanish real estate mogul Enrique Banuelos, in some kind of partnership with the FIA. I know the FIA is interested in green tech for racing. I wonder what they're contributing other than sanctioning? Traveling around the world to race cars is expensive, and even a billionaire can't afford that for too long.

I'm not sure who will pay to see it. A huge part of going to motor races is the noise. F1, for example, is worried about engine note when they switch to a smaller engine next season. Electric cars will only have gear whine and tire noise. Almost silent. That doesn't get the adrenaline pumping. TV doesn't rely as much on noise. But who's going to want to televise this series?

It'll go over like the A1 racing league.

Whatever happened to the Rocket Racing League?

That's kind of what I was thinking, although I am not a diehard race fan. The SI article did mention that noise, or the lack thereof, was a concern that the promoters and sponsors were aware of. I'll have to read it again, but I think their answer was basically that over time race fans will figure out that cars going fast is exciting to watch even without the noise. I have my doubts.

No, that's Formula B-D (bio-diesel).
