It's shit pouring the rain over at Deal's Gap right now so if you left Houston you could ride in behind that storm system. There are a couple of inmate run shops around should you need anything and after you get bored at Deal's Gap (where you can camp if you want) you can ride the Cherohala Skyway (look it up = awesome) and then ride offroad all throughout the National Forest.

Not that I'm biased or anything...

ADV, choose my destination!

Here are the rules:
- I'm in Houston, Texas, currently, so it should be a days ride from here. I don't want to slab it, so keep that in mind in terms of distance.
- Destination must be roughly north-east of here (Deals Gap is where I'd like to end up by the weekend). A little more north, or a little more east is fine.
- Not looking to stay in the Hilton, so should be somewhere I can find inexpensive, or free camping.
-No pee-pee sword fighting skin bars, you whackos.
How about heading for the Natchez Trace. Here is a possible first leg for you.

EDIT: Just playing around, here is a more complete route including the entire length of the Trace. Also check into camping at Tishomingo State Park in N.E. Mississippi.

Natchez trace is mellow. I know there is at least one free camping spot.

I've ridden the Trace, to me it was a long, boring tree tunnel! I grew up with mountains and twisty roads and that is what fires my rockets. The Skyway is great, the side roads off the Blue Ridge are awesome. YMMV however.

I say ride to the Keys, I've been wanting to do that and could go for some recent pictures, haha.

One of the most memorable rides I've had was at the start of the keys on a rented Harley Sportster 1200. It's dead straight but a cool route nonetheless.

Thanks everyone for the advice. The Tent Space thread is great! I feel guilty 'cold calling' others for a handout though. Perhaps I can think up some kind of barter to help you fellas out as well.
Its very good of you to think that you need to help out the people who host you in the tent space, but I would say the people on there enjoy the experience as much as you appreciate their hospitality. I have only been called on once to host another rider, Stef from France was mid way through a 2+ yea RTW trip, he stayed under our roof for 2 days, we fed him food and booze and were happy to do it, great experience.

Enjoy you trip, if you can help out your host that's awesome, but don't feel guilty at all.

Cheers, Todd

best of luck on your trip. At 25 I'm going through a similar phase. My friends called it a quarter life crisis and my coworkers called me crazy when I quit my job to travel.

Where's the like button on this dang thing? -- good on ya Todd.

Ya know this bug we all have is more like the military comradery than anything I have experienced sense the service back in the early 70s -- and I for one enjoy it - appreciate it and feel lucky to be a part of it! Thanks Guys.

Good luck, you'll be fine. Just remember it's the journey not the destination that is important.

+1 on the dont feel guilty about hitting up the people offering tent space, they wouldnt do it if they werent happy to help. I dont know yet....but I suspect and hopefully will find out that the world is actually full of helpful people when I do drop this collar and become free like you. Go for it mang!!

When the time comes can I request a ADV salute at about 10 o'clock please?? no spreader needed (I get the feeling being as gentle as you can with the bike is going to be the name of the game for you)

In for the haul for sure
